Driver banned after cocaine found in system during A40 stop check

Motorist told court he had taken drugs the night before socialising with friends

A DRUG DRIVER who was arrested during a routine stop check was this week ordered off the roads for 12 months.

A stop check carried out on Dean Browne as he drove his Volvo V50 along the A40 at Slebech last December prompted officers to carry out a roadside drugs swipe. When it proved positive, further blood tests were carried out at the police station which showed that Browne had 240 mcg of the cocaine metabolism benzoylecgonine in his system. The legal limit is 50.

Browne, who has no previous convictions, accepted that he’d taken cocaine the night before whilst socialising with friends.

“He is sorry for his actions and understands now that the drug can remain in the system for some time,” said his solicitor Jess Hill, after Browne pleaded guilty to the drug-driving offence when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates this week.

In addition to the 12-month driving ban, Browne, of Horeb Road, Mynydd y Garreg, Kidwelly, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £48 surcharge.

FOUR DEFENDANTS WILL APPEAR AT SWANSEA CROWN COURT NEXT MONTH

THREE prisoners have been charged with failing to disclose the PIN codes to their mobile phones after being remanded in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to supply drugs.

Ahmed Al-Farraji, 25, Leon Haines, 26, and Kalum Haines, 22, are each accused of failing to comply with a Section 49 notice after allegedly refusing to provide the codes when asked to do so by police officers.

A fourth defendant, Mili Davies-Blewett, 26, faces an identical charge following her arrest on February 27.

All four defendants appeared before Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court this week.

Al-Farraji and Davies-Blewett both denied the charge. No pleas were entered by Leon Haines or Kalum Haines.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction due to the seriousness of the case, and the matter will now proceed to Swansea Crown Court on May 18.

Davies-Blewett, of Tan y Bryn, Burry Port, was released on unconditional bail.

Al-Farraji, Leon Haines and Kalum Haines were remanded in custody.

CCTV APPEAL ISSUED

POLICE have launched an arson investigation after a derelict building was destroyed in a major overnight fire in Haverfordwest.

Emergency services were called to Snowdrop Lane at around 11:20pm on Monday (Apr 27), after flames broke out at a two-storey derelict commercial property.

As previously reported by The Herald, residents were told to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed as smoke spread across the area.

Fire crews from Haverfordwest and Milford Haven attended, along with specialist appliances including a turntable ladder and water bowser. Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours before leaving shortly after 2:00am on Tuesday morning.

Dyfed-Powys Police has now confirmed that local officers are investigating the incident as arson.

A police spokesperson said officers are appealing for anyone with information, Ring doorbell footage, or CCTV which could help the investigation to come forward.

Police will remain in the street today carrying out door-to-door crime enquiries.

No injuries have been reported.

Anyone with information can contact Dyfed-Powys Police online, email [email protected], send a direct message on social media, or call 101.

Man who assaulted woman remanded after failing to attend court

A 50-YEAR-OLD man of no fixed abode has been remanded in custody after admitting failing to surrender to court bail.

Michael Sudbury, whose address was listed as no fixed abode, Llangunnor Road, Llangunnor, Carmarthen, appeared before Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (Apr 23) following the execution of a bench warrant.

Sudbury admitted failing without reasonable cause to surrender to custody at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Apr 20), having previously been released on bail at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on March 30.

The court also dealt with a common assault matter. Sudbury had denied assaulting the female in Haverfordwest on October 22, 2025, but was found guilty on Monday (Apr 20).

Magistrates Mr S Weatherall, Mr C Rees and Mr J Ross committed Sudbury to Swansea Crown Court for sentence.

He was remanded in custody on the basis that inquiries are needed and to determine the most suitable way of dealing with the case. The court recorded bail exceptions including a likelihood of further offending and a risk of causing injury or fear of injury to an associated person.

A pre-sentence report was ordered and a victim personal statement is expected to be presented to the court.

Sudbury will next appear at Swansea Crown Court on Thursday, May 7, at 9:00am.
