Williams’ double sees off Seasiders

Published

on

HAVERFORDWEST County put in another excellent pre-season display as they beat a youthful Aberystwyth Town side 2-1 at the Bridge Meadow on Saturday (Jul 28).

The Bluebirds beat Goodwick United 7-1 in their last outing but came up against tougher Welsh Premier League opponents.

That did not faze them as the Bluebirds started the game well and they could have gone ahead after fifteen minutes but Tim Hicks saw his effort cleared off the line.

Ricky Watts also came close for the home side but the former Seasiders was denied by a good save from Aber keeper Alex Pennock.

Harri Rowe and Tom Evans both looked dangerous on the wings for Aber as they linked up well with Geoff Kellaway and Nashawn Blake.

It was the Bluebirds though who took the lead on the half hour mark as another former Seasider Elliot Scotcher saw his strong shot saved, but only into the path of Danny Williams who tapped in the rebound to make it 1-0.

Scotcher again came close to scoring against his old side as he saw his free kick bounce out off the crossbar.

It remained 1-0 to the home side when the half time whistle went but Aber started the second half well.

They were eventually rewarded for their good start as Lee Jenkins’ shot towards goal was deflected in by Geoff Kellaway to level the game at 1-1.

However, the Bluebirds were soon back in front as Williams played a one-two with Martin Carrol before firing a fantastic strike into the top corner of the net.

Steff Williams was denied by the offside flag late on as the home side went in search of a third goal but the whistle was blown on another excellent pre-season performance for the Bluebirds.

Tomorrow night (Aug 1), the Bluebirds are away as they take on Pontardawe in another friendly while on Saturday (Aug 4), they are also away as they take on Swansea University.

The Welsh League season gets underway the following Saturday (Aug 11) as the Bluebirds welcome Llantwit Major to the Bridge Meadow.

LAWRENNY got their 2021 season off to the perfect start on Saturday (May 1) as they beat Whitland by 189 runs.

Whitland won the toss and elected to field but they could only watch as the home side piled on the runs before being bowled out for 264.

Tom Cole added 32 and James Phillips chipped in with a score of 29 as they batted well.

Wayne Howells and Jonathan Thomas finished with identical figures of 2-27 as Whitland’s bowling did at least keep the score below 300.

Whitland knew they would need to bat well to knock off the runs needed but came up against Ryan Morton who took four wickets for the loss of 17 runs.

Kurtis Marsh also claimed two wickets without conceding any runs as the visitors chances got smaller and smaller.

Geraint Jones did score 30 for Whitland but that was as good as it got as they were bowled out for just 75.
