Abuse and threats hurled at officer in Tenby

Hundreds heard racist obscenities in town centre

A COURT has heard how members of the public were subjected to verbal obscenities and racial harassment directed at a police officer in the centre of one of Pembrokeshire’s busiest tourist towns.

Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court was told that on Thursday (Aug 8), hundreds of people visiting Tenby witnessed Jay Thomas shouting abuse at PC Stuart Gray.

The officer was subjected to a torrent of obscenities, including being called “a Scottish c***”, while Thomas also threatened that he would “stab the s*** out of him”.

Magistrates heard that Thomas’ behaviour continued after his arrest. While being conveyed to custody, he spat inside the rear of the police vehicle and, once placed in a cell, pushed a blanket down the toilet, causing damage.

A subsequent search of the defendant revealed that he was in possession of 0.7 grams of cocaine.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, PC Gray said: “I don’t expect to be threatened or called a Scottish c*** when I’m doing my job.

“I was also embarrassed for all the holidaymakers who had to listen to his language and witness his behaviour.”

Thomas, aged 21, of Newell Hill, Tenby, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment of PC Gray, causing criminal damage to a police vehicle and a police blanket, possession of cocaine, and using threatening, abusive and insulting words and behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He was represented by solicitor Alaw Harries, who told the court that the defendant was “deeply ashamed” of his conduct.

She said: “The offences were fuelled by alcohol and he has little memory of what happened. He is deeply ashamed and now wants to work with probation to address the issues behind his behaviour.”

Thomas was sentenced to a 12-month community order, during which he must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and comply with a 90-day alcohol monitoring requirement.

He was also ordered to pay a £114 court surcharge and £85 in costs. A forfeiture and destruction order was made in respect of the cocaine.

Man drove off after drinking following argument at Tenby Golf Club

A DECISION to drive a short distance following a marital argument at Tenby Golf Club proved a costly mistake after a driving ban was imposed by magistrates this week.

Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court heard that Nigel Wood, aged 57, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday (Dec 7) after police received a tip-off from concerned staff at the golf club, who reported that he had driven off after consuming alcohol.

The court was told that Wood and his wife had earlier attended a rugby match in Tenby before travelling to Tenby Golf Club, where they had booked to stay the night.

Wood’s solicitor, Josie Flicker said: “They walked back into town to the rugby club where alcohol was consumed, before returning on foot to the hotel.

“Unfortunately, an argument then broke out between the defendant and his wife.”

Following the disagreement, Wood made the decision to drive away from the golf club.

Ms Flicker added: “It was a very short-lived decision. When he reached the junction by the hotel, he thought better of it, parked the vehicle and went for a walk instead.”

However, during that brief journey, staff at the golf club had already contacted the police.

Wood, of Hylton Terrace, Bedlinog, Treharris, pleaded guilty to driving after consuming excess alcohol.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £760. He was also ordered to pay a £304 surcharge and £85 in court costs.

Painter accused of knocking partner unconscious after ‘years of abuse’

Man charged with assault, threats to kill and knife possession will face trial at Crown Court

A PEMBROKESHIRE painter and decorator has appeared before magistrates accused of knocking his partner unconscious following what the Crown alleges were years of domestic abuse.

Haverfordwest magistrates heard this week that the complainant claims she was forced to flee her home barefoot with her young child after allegedly being assaulted by Jamie Clews, 38.

The court was told that the incident is said to have occurred at the couple’s address in Hubberston while the woman was running a bath.

“By the time she regained consciousness, the bath was overflowing and water had begun pouring through the downstairs ceiling,” Crown Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court.

“She left the property barefoot, accompanied by her young child, and later collapsed in a local pub.”

Ms Vaughan said the complainant alleges she had been subjected to domestic violence by Clews over a considerable period of time.

“Her arm has been fractured, she has had a knife held to her throat while being told she was going to be killed, and she has been beaten unconscious,” she said.

A victim impact statement was read to the court in which the complainant claimed she had endured several years of abuse.

“There have been times when I’ve been afraid for my life,” she said.

“No-one should have to live with domestic violence, but I’m petrified of him. I don’t want my children to grow up seeing their mother subjected to violent atrocities from Jamie, or from anyone else.”

Clews is charged with assaulting the complainant on two separate occasions, possessing a knife in a private place, making threats to kill, and causing criminal damage to her iPhone.

After considering the seriousness of the allegations, magistrates declined jurisdiction and committed the case to Swansea Crown Court, where Clews is due to appear on January 23.

The Crown applied for Clews to be remanded in custody, a request opposed by defence solicitor Tom Lloyd. No pleas were entered at this stage, though the defence indicated the allegations would be denied.

“This is a bare-bones file, and on that basis the court is being asked to remand a hard-working painter and decorator in custody,” Mr Lloyd said.

“The defendant has been assaulted in the pub on numerous occasions by the complainant, and there is CCTV footage to support that. No mention of this has been made in court this morning. Jamie Clews was the victim here, not her.”

Following a short adjournment, magistrates agreed to release Clews on conditional bail.

The conditions include that he resides with his father at an address in Narberth, has no direct or indirect contact with the complainant, does not enter Hubberston, and observes a daily curfew between 8:00pm and 6:30am.

Pembrokeshire defendant admitted harassment, threats and assaults on same victim

A 26-YEAR-OLD Pembrokeshire man has been remanded in custody after admitting sharing intimate images of a woman on social media, causing her humiliation, alarm and distress.

Brandon Pugh appeared before Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court this week via video link from Swansea Prison, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court heard that Pugh also admitted a series of additional charges involving the same woman. These included assault by beating, harassment by sending numerous messages threatening to harm her and members of her family, and a further assault by beating.

Due to the seriousness of the offences, magistrates remanded Pugh, of Fir Grove, Begelly, in custody ahead of sentencing.

He is due to be sentenced on January 12.
