Tigers snap losing streak

JOHNSTON snapped their seven game losing streak as they scored a last minute winner to beat Angle 3-2 on Saturday (Feb 28).

The Tigers clawed themselves back from 2-1 down and a Jack Mills free kick gave them victory.

The win comes as a big relief for Johnston who were being dragged into a relegation battle following their recent run.

The home side had the first chance of the match in the fifth minute but Adam Hawkins’ effort from close range was blocked away for a corner.

Angle hit back with a chance of their own but Lee Brockway’s shot was saved by the Tigers keeper.

Tom Grimwood also had a couple of chances for Angle as the visitors began to dominate but on both occasions he shot wide of the post.

With twenty-three minutes gone Lee Brockway sent an inviting ball into the six yard area and Connor Willis poked the ball home to give Angle a deserved lead.

They could have doubled their lead ten minutes before half time but Jason Evans saw his shot saved.

The home side rallied late on in the first half and were unlucky not to go in level as after good play between Scott Murray and Adam Hawkins, the former shot just wide of the right hand post.

Ten minutes into the second half the home side were level with a well-worked goal. Jack Mills crossed into the box and Liam Boswell controlled the ball and turned before shooting into the top corner.

With just under half an hour to go Angle were awarded a controversial penalty. Keeper Josh Peace was booked for not keeping the peace in his protestations and he was then sent the wrong way by Lee Brockway making it 2-1 to Angle.

Rain continued to make it difficult for both teams as the pitch started to cut up but with ten minutes remaining Johnston were level.

Substitute and player/manager Jamie Picton’s shot was deflected in by Adam Hawkins making the score 2-2.

Johnston were dealt a blow when one of their players was sent off in the final minute of the ninety but that did not stop them looking for a winner.

Deep into injury time the Tigers were awarded a free kick which Jack Mills took and the ball flew over every one and into the corner of the net sparking wild celebrations amongst the Johnston players.

The Tigers held on for an important win and will look forward to their next game against bottom club Saundersfoot Sports. Angle will look to bounce back in their next game against St Clears.

Haverfordwest County Women make it two wins from two in Phase 2

HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY AFC Women continued their strong start to Phase 2 with an impressive 4–2 victory over a determined Morriston Town side on Sunday.

It was a superb all-round performance from the Bluebirds, combining sharp team play with some outstanding individual finishes. Striker Kayla Jones led the way with a well-taken brace, while Ella May Mumford and Tayla Gibbs also got on the scoresheet to secure all three points.

The win makes it back-to-back victories in Division A, further strengthening the squad’s momentum going into the next fixture.

Haverfordwest County now turn their attention to their next home match on Sunday 23rd, when they host Bonymaen Colts Ladies.

Sport Pembrokeshire Awards finalists announced

THE FINALISTS for this year’s Sport Pembrokeshire Awards have been revealed, with 39 individuals and clubs shortlisted for honours at the annual celebration of local sporting achievement.

Cllr Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “A big thank you to everyone who sent in nominations. The judging panel had an extremely tough task narrowing down such a strong field of candidates.

“Pembrokeshire continues to punch above its weight when it comes to sporting prowess, and I’m sure the awards will once again showcase both on-field success and the incredible efforts of the volunteers and coaches who make it all possible.”

The winners will be unveiled at a gala ceremony at Folly Farm on November 28, organised by Sport Pembrokeshire.

The event is sponsored by Valero, Folly Farm, and Pure West Radio, and will also see the presentation of three special accolades — the School Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, and Chairman’s Special Achievement Award.

The awards recognise those who have excelled in sport over the past year or dedicated their time to coaching, organising, and supporting grassroots sport across the county.

BBC Cymru Wales to show festive Welsh URC derbies free-to-air

WELSH rugby fans are set for a strong line-up of festive fixtures after BBC Cymru Wales confirmed it will broadcast three BKT United Rugby Championship derbies over Christmas and New Year.

The matches will be shown live on Scrum V Live as part of a co-exclusive agreement with Premier Sports, meaning both broadcasters will carry the games simultaneously. The fixtures include Cardiff v Scarlets on Thursday, 19 December at 7:45pm, Cardiff v Dragons on Boxing Day at 3:00pm, and Ospreys v Cardiff on New Year’s Day at 5:30pm.

All three programmes will be presented by Catrin Heledd, with commentary from Gareth Rhys Owen. Former Wales stars Alun Wyn Jones and Jonathan “Fox” Davies are among the guests lined up to offer analysis.

Garmon Rhys, Interim Director of BBC Cymru Wales, said the broadcaster was pleased to showcase the festive derbies once again. He said the games had become a key part of many Welsh households’ Christmas sporting traditions and praised the production teams delivering the live coverage.

United Rugby Championship chief executive Martin Anayi welcomed the arrangement, describing the derbies as an important part of the Welsh rugby calendar and saying the partnership would help the matches reach as wide an audience as possible.
