Haverfordwest: Council Leader responds to losing education shake-up vote
THE LEADER of Pembrokeshire County Council has released a statement following the vote on Thursday (May 12) where members rebelled against the Authority’s plans for sixth form reform in Haverfordwest in a dramatic vote.
Cllr Jamie Adams said: “We recognise and accept the position of Council and look forward to moving ahead positively in terms of the re-organisation of secondary education in Haverfordwest.
“As we have said many times, the education of our children is of paramount importance to us and we are resolute in our determination to achieve the very best outcome for them.

We recognise and accept the position: Council Leader Jamie Adams
“This is a new phase of education planning for Haverfordwest and we are keen to bring pupils, staff, governors, trustees and the wider school community with us as we embark on this journey.
“As previously, all options will be considered.”
As Cllr Adams was preparing his statement to the media, Save our Sixth Form Pembrokeshire posted on Facebook: “We understand that the leadership of Pembrokeshire County Council are furious at the result. They have convened a meeting to look into overturning the vote, as there wasn’t a plan B in place.
“Perhaps they should channel their energies into considering which heads should roll for wasting public money and bringing the council into disrepute; a situation brought about entirely by the officers of that council and NOT the pupils, school staff, governors, trust, or people of Pembrokeshire.
“Whilst, after winning this battle, we can allow ourselves a moments rest but the fight continues.”
Chairman of the Governors of Tasker Milward School, Paul Lucas, praised the students.
Mr Lucas said: “The students contribution to this result must not be underestimated and I am sure that if it was not for their unending demand to be heard over the last three years, and several changes of sixth form intelligentsia, the rest of those opposed to the loss of sixth form teaching in the secondary schools would have failed.
“They have conducted themselves with aplomb throughout this campaign and deserve the respect the County Councillors gave their views today.
“ I am proud of the contribution our school has managed to provide in their development.”

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
