‘Successful’ new unique educational initiative

Collaboration between MHS, the Port of Milford Haven and PCF: Year nine students from Milford Haven Comprehensive to benefit from new educational programme
SIXTY year nine students from Milford Haven Comprehensive School are set to be the first to complete a new educational programme which is unique to Pembrokeshire.
The programme, called ‘Coastal Curriculum’, aims to engage students in local coastal matters and highlight important issues such as sustainable development, as well as promoting career opportunities within the maritime, coastal and renewable energy sectors.
Coastal Curriculum delivers in-lesson activities in line with the National Curriculum, relating subject matters to opportunities and issues at a Pembrokeshire level.
In 2015, this initiative was piloted in two geography classes at the school, with staff from Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum (PCF) delivering lessons to two different class groups in year nine.
These lessons provided students with local economic, social and environmental awareness which they were then able to use to demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter in their forthcoming examinations.
Mr Letton, Head of Geography at Milford Haven Comprehensive School, said of the impact the programme has had on his students: “Getting the students across each of the key stages interested in the port and its activities is important for them as it will put some of the knowledge and skills they have learned in school into context.”
Coastal Curriculum is a collaborative initiative which has been developed for the Port of Milford Haven by PCF with additional support from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund.
Anna Malloy, PR and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven, said: “As a Trust Port, future generations are the Port’s ultimate stakeholder.
“Working collaboratively with PCF on this project has enriched our outreach to school and enabled us to engage with children of all ages in fun, imaginative ways.
“We are especially grateful to Milford Haven Comprehensive School for their support with the pilot Coastal Curriculum project in 2015. Mr Letton provided valuable input which has helped to shape the project going forward.”
Jodie McGregor, Engagement Coordinator at Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, said: “We are glad to have had such positive feedback from the school following this successful pilot.
“We very much look forward to building lasting relationships with schools and businesses across Pembrokeshire, allowing those involved to help our future generations to realise the many opportunities available around them.”

- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- A second count of assault

Castlemartin man back before magistrates over multiple alleged assaults
Defendant remanded on conditional bail ahead of further hearing
A CASTLEMARTIN man has appeared repeatedly before magistrates this month over a string A 40-year-old man from Castlemartin has made repeated appearances before magistrates this month in connection with a series of serious alleged offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), intentional non-fatal strangulation, common assault, and criminal damage.
Anthony Alcock, of Pwll Street, Castlemartin, is facing six linked charges stemming from incidents said to have occurred earlier this year. These appear to relate to the same complainant in what is understood to be a single ongoing domestic abuse prosecution.
During recent administrative hearings at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, Alcock did not enter pleas while matters of bail and case management were addressed.
Charges Include:
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Intentional non-fatal strangulation
- Common assault on a woman
- Criminal damage in a domestic context
- Additional assault allegations involving the same complainant
- Breach of bail conditions
Alcock was initially granted conditional bail but was subsequently brought before the court on two occasions for alleged breaches. On those instances, magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of further hearings. He was later re-granted conditional bail, subject to strict conditions such as no contact with the complainant and exclusion from specified locations.
Magistrates have now declined jurisdiction, ruling that the case—particularly the more serious charges involving non-fatal strangulation—is too grave for summary trial. It has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for plea, trial, or sentencing.
No detailed evidence has been presented in open court at this preliminary stage. Alcock remains on conditional bail pending his next appearance at the Crown Court.
