Running to victory: Year 4 Girls race against each other at this year’s Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships, held at Oakwood

A RECORD number of competitors took part in this year’s Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships.

Over 1,100 young athletes representing 51 schools from across the county took their marks at Oakwood Theme Park for one of the highlights of the school calendar.

With perfect conditions underfoot, the runners recorded some excellent times across the eight age group races and, as usual, the ‘wall of sound’ along the finishing straight was deafening as supporters from each school cheered on their friends.

Students from Sir Thomas Picton and Pembroke School acted as ‘Hares’ for the event, making sure competitors stayed on course from start to finish and their contribution was a great aid to the race management.

“This event is one of the great spectacles of school sport in Pembrokeshire,” said Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr David Lloyd.

“It’s encouraging to see so many youngsters taking part and even better to see them so enthused by it. Congratulations to all of them.”

Golden Grove were crowned overall winners of the competition, with Hook CP School winning the Small School Shield for the third year in four.

Sport Pembrokeshire Awards finalists announced

Published

on

THE FINALISTS for this year’s Sport Pembrokeshire Awards have been revealed, with 39 individuals and clubs shortlisted for honours at the annual celebration of local sporting achievement.

Cllr Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “A big thank you to everyone who sent in nominations. The judging panel had an extremely tough task narrowing down such a strong field of candidates.

“Pembrokeshire continues to punch above its weight when it comes to sporting prowess, and I’m sure the awards will once again showcase both on-field success and the incredible efforts of the volunteers and coaches who make it all possible.”

The winners will be unveiled at a gala ceremony at Folly Farm on November 28, organised by Sport Pembrokeshire.

The event is sponsored by Valero, Folly Farm, and Pure West Radio, and will also see the presentation of three special accolades — the School Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, and Chairman’s Special Achievement Award.
