£1.2m of funding creates new jobs and helps businesses
FOUR projects across Pembrokeshire will receive almost £1.2million in extra funding, creating jobs and helping new businesses.
Milford Haven Seafood Limited has received £300,000 in funding, which will create 20 new jobs in the town.
The two-year project will see crab, lobster and whelks processed in a new facility. Local fisherman will be able to sell their catch to the business, to be processed and exported to markets in continental Europe and the Far East.
The Big Lottery Fund’s Coastal Communities Fund will finance 20 full-time jobs, as well as contributing to the cost of marketing and purchasing shellfish.
£72,000 will pay for cooking ovens, packing machinery and grading machines. 46 jobs will also be safeguarded throughout the project.
The total cost of the project comes to £850,000, with the Welsh Government, HSBC Bank and Private Equity Investors securing the remaining match funding of £550,000.
Having been awarded £299,872, Leask Marine Ltd will establish a base in Pembroke Dock to support the growing aquaculture and marine renewables markets.
One direct and 2.5 indirect jobs will be created by the project, which will also support six businesses. The two-year grant will help fund the purchase of a Falcon remotely operated vehicle (ROV), plastic welding equipment as well as salary costs.
Saundersfoot Harbour will receive £300,000 to develop a Canoe Rapids Centre, that will be used for both emergency service training and recreational use.
In combination with the Coastal Schooner Experience – a purpose built exhibition, events and outdoor cinema space – the scheme aims to create more than 12 jobs, with visitor numbers hoped to increase by more than 9,000 a year.
St Davids-based Robust Boats have been provided with £300,000, which is set to be used to buy land on which they can build a larger workshop.
This will allow the business to increase boat-building capacity and double the workforce from three employees to six. The new premises will also house the company’s second business that sells boating related equipment.
This will allow the business to grow and an additional member of staff can be recruited.
The remainder of the £600,750 project will be from private finance.

Mother admits to killing seven-year-old son in Haverfordwest
A mother has admitted to the manslaughter of her seven-year-old son at their home in Haverfordwest, citing diminished responsibility.
Papaipit Linse, 43, appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Friday (Nov 22), where she denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of her son, Louis Linse. Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC confirmed the manslaughter plea would be accepted, stating it “did not come as a surprise” to the prosecution.
The incident occurred on 10 January when police were called to a property on Upper Market Street. Louis was rushed to Withybush General Hospital but tragically died shortly afterwards.
During the hearing, Linse, who spoke only to confirm her name and enter her pleas, was informed that she would be sentenced on 13 December. Judge Paul Thomas KC described the case as “clearly a very sensitive as well as a very tragic case.”
The court was told that Linse is currently receiving treatment at the Caswell Clinic, a mental health facility in Bridgend. Psychiatric evidence is expected to be presented during the sentencing hearing to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the case.
