St Davids Cathedral to host world premiere and a recital by internationally renowned pianist Llŷr Williams next week.

TWO major classical concerts will take place next week in the stunning surroundings of St Davids Cathedral as part of the 2022 Fishguard and West Wales International Music Festival.

Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams makes a welcome return to the festival with a recital of music by Haydn, Schumann, Rachmaninov and Liszt. Widely admired for his profound musical intelligence and for the expressive and communicative nature of his interpretations, he regularly appears at prestigious venues and festivals, and has performed with all the major UK orchestras. Earlier this year he made his Madrid recital debut and returned to North America to the Capital Region Classical series in Montreal. Llŷr Williams will be in concert on Thursday 1 September at 7.30pm.

The Festival has this year commissioned composer Geraint Lewis to write a short work for the Marian Consort as part of their concert programme on Tuesday 30 August at the Cathedral.

The Marian Consort is a vocal ensemble that performs music from the fifteenth century to the present day. Critically acclaimed for their bold and thrilling performances across the UK, Europe and North America, they have released twelve recordings and are frequent guests on BBC Radio 3.

Gillian Green MBE, Artistic Director of the Festival, said: “The Marian Consort are calling their concert ‘Music of the Sistine Chapel’. It was therefore important to commission a composer who was familiar with the music of Palestrina and other composers of the era. Cardiff born Geraint Lewis has composed around 150 works in nearly all genres including a community opera and a choral symphony. He was commissioned to write ‘Afallon’ for the Welsh National Opera Chorus to sing at the opening of the National Assembly for Wales in 1999. I am delighted that he has accepted the commission which will receive its world premiere at the Cathedral.”

Geraint Lewis commented: “I am delighted to have been asked to compose for the voices of the Marian Consort in the atmospheric and historic surroundings of St Davids. I have decided to write a setting of ‘Ave Regina Caelorum’ for this Festival concert. It is a prayer usually sung in the Liturgy of the Hours at the close of compline. At a point in the composing, I suddenly thought that it was a bit odd for a Welshman to be writing only in Latin for a concert of this kind held in our own ‘Sistine Chapel’ – and then remembered the poetic translation of the text by Saunders Lewis which he made in 1938. So, at the appropriate mid-point these words take over. It is also a modest homage to Ralph Vaughan Williams in the year of his 150th anniversary and in remembering his strong West Wales ancestry.”

Tickets for both concerts are priced £12 to £20 with concessions of £5 for under 18s and £1 for under 12s. A Festival bus will operate from Cardigan with pick up points at Newport, Dinas, Fishguard and Goodwick.

Dinosaurs set to take over Milford Waterfront

PREHISTORIC FUN COMES TO MILFORD HAVEN

DINOSAURS will be roaming Milford Waterfront later this month as Dinomania brings a day of prehistoric entertainment to the town.

The popular dinosaur attraction will take over the waterfront on Wednesday, May 27, with three interactive shows taking place throughout the afternoon.

Each show will last around 50 minutes and promises plenty of audience participation, prehistoric facts, and family-friendly fun.

Before the ticketed shows begin, visitors are being encouraged to keep an eye out around Milford Waterfront, where Dinomania’s dinosaurs will be out and about during a free walkabout performance between 10:30am and 11:30am.

The walkabout will give families the chance to see the dinosaurs up close and enjoy some entertainment around the waterfront before the main shows get underway.

Milford Waterfront said: “Dinomania will be taking over Milford Waterfront on Wednesday, May 27, with three exciting shows taking place throughout the afternoon.

“Each show lasts approximately 50 minutes and is packed with interactive moments and prehistoric fun.”

Hubberston Girls exhibition launches new space at Waterfront Gallery

A NEW exhibition exploring memories of growing up on a council estate has opened at the Waterfront Gallery in Milford Haven.

Artist Lynn Stuart is launching the gallery’s new exhibition space with her solo show, Hubberston Girls, which runs until Saturday, May 30.

The exhibition features a deeply personal series of works drawn and painted on brown paper. The material was chosen for its connection to everyday memories, including lunch bags and magazines wrapped in paper.

Once oiled, the paper becomes semi-transparent, allowing paint to be applied to the reverse and creating layered, intimate images.

The Waterfront Gallery is extending its opening hours for the exhibition and will be open Monday to Saturday, from 10:30am to 4:00pm.

A private view will be held on Thursday, May 14, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, and all are welcome.

The gallery is based in the Old Sail Loft on Discovery Quay, Milford Waterfront, Milford Haven. It is one of south west Wales’s leading art galleries, a registered charity, and home to the Wales Contemporary annual competition.

The gallery is run by artist volunteers who exhibit there regularly.

Dinosaur adventure stomps into Milford Haven

A FAMILY dinosaur show 65 million years in the making is heading to Milford Haven this summer.

Dinosaur Adventure Live: Danger on T-Rex Mountain will headline the Torch Theatre on Thursday, July 30.

The interactive stage show promises storytelling, puppetry, humour and science as young audiences join a team of rangers on a mission to recover a data crystal, restore power to the island and save the dinosaurs.

Children will be encouraged to stomp, roar and swish their tails as they meet baby dinosaurs, learn “Dino-Facts” and come face-to-face with a roaring T-Rex.

Created by Mike Newman, the producer behind Exciting Science, the show is now in its fifth year and is aimed at families with children aged four and over.
