Tenby is blooming ready for judging
JUDGING for the 50th national finals of RHS Britain in Bloom gets under way between July 28 and August 8.
Tenby’s green-fingered volunteers have been busy putting the finishing touches to their Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign in preparation for the judges’ imminent arrival on Thursday. Last summer, 71 locations were selected to represent their region/ nation in this year’s final, each hoping to score top marks and be announced category winner at the awards ceremony in Bristol on October 16. Tenby is in the Coastal (up to 12k) category, alongside Filey and Hunstanton. This year the UK’s largest community gardening campaign celebrates its 50th anniversary and thousands of volunteers in cities, towns and villages across the country have been busy ‘Growing for Gold’ in celebration of this momentous year. There are more than 3,900 Bloom groups throughout Britain whose work benefits millions of UK residents by keeping our neighbourhoods and streets green, clean and thriving. RHS judges Martyn Hird and Rae Beckwith will meet community representatives and go on a tour of local projects, assessing In Bloom campaigns against three key criteria: horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility. Communities hope to receive a Bronze, Silver, Silver-Gilt or Gold award, depending on their level of achievement. Chairman of Tenby in Bloom and mayor of Tenby, Cllr Mrs Sue Lane said: “We are really looking forward to meeting Rae again and to welcoming Martyn to our town for the first time when they visit. “We really value the input of the Britain in Bloom judges and their advice on how we can further improve our town’s status as one of the top 20 most beautiful small towns in the world. I would like to thank the Town Beautification Team, all our sponsors and the many other volunteers who do so much throughout the year to help make Tenby the beautiful place it is.” To find out more about the power of community gardening or to join almost 4,000 RHS Britain in Bloom groups already involved, visit: www. rhs.org.uk/communities

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
