Why the coronation is a momentous occasion for Wales, and not just England
THE CORONATION of Charles III, the Prince of Wales, is set to be a momentous occasion for Wales, with the country’s rich cultural heritage and traditions taking center stage in the ceremony. The use of the Welsh language during the coronation has already been announced, and it has been revealed that a special Welsh gold crown will be presented to the new king for the occasion.

The Welsh gold crown, known as the Crown of the Second Consort, was created in 1911 for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, Queen Mary. It has been loaned to the royal family by the City of Cardiff and will be worn by Charles III during the coronation ceremony, marking a significant moment for Wales and its history.
Welsh gold has a long and treasured history, and its use in the crown reflects the precious metal’s purity and rarity. Welsh gold was used for the wedding rings of both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and it has been used in royal regalia for over a century.
The presentation of the Crown of the Second Consort in the coronation ceremony is not only a significant moment for Wales, but it also highlights the strong links between Wales and the monarchy. Wales has a long-standing connection with the British monarchy, with the title of Prince of Wales traditionally given to the eldest son of the reigning monarch. Prince Charles, who has been an advocate for Welsh culture and language throughout his life, has been associated with Wales for decades and his coronation is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the country’s unique identity and cultural heritage.

In addition to the use of the Welsh language and the Crown of the Second Consort, other Welsh traditions are expected to be included in the coronation ceremony. The Welsh Guards, a regiment of the British Army that is based in Wales, will be part of the military procession. Welsh harpist Catrin Finch is also expected to perform during the service.
Pembrokeshire horses from the Shire Horse Farm will be participating in the major Apollo & King’s Coronation Parade in London, which is being held in honor of the coronation of Charles III. The farm’s six shire horses will be pulling a traditional carriage during the parade, showcasing the breed’s strength and beauty. The farm’s owner has expressed excitement at the opportunity to participate in the parade and to represent the Welsh agricultural industry on a national stage.

The inclusion of Welsh language and cultural traditions during such a significant national event sends a message of the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the UK. It is an opportunity to showcase Wales and its unique identity to the world, highlighting its stunning landscapes, historic castles, and rich musical traditions.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
