Tenby rugby player secures spot in third consecutive U20 World Rugby Championship game
PEMBROKESHIRE’S talented rugby player, Archie Hughes, aged 20, has once again clinched his position as the starting number 9 for the crucial U20 World Rugby Championship match against Georgia. The game is scheduled for today, Sunday, July 9. Hughes, who plays for the Scarlets, has demonstrated his exceptional skills and consistency, earning him the opportunity to represent Wales in the tournament.
In preparation for this high-stakes clash, the Welsh team has made several changes to their lineup following their recent loss to France in the final group game. Llien Morgan will join the team as a replacement for Harri Houston on the wing. Houston, in turn, will take on the role of fullback, as Cameron Winnett was unfortunately unable to participate. Additionally, Joe Westwood will make his first start of the campaign, while Lewis Lloyd will replace Sam Scarfe as hooker.
The upcoming match against Georgia carries immense importance for Wales U20, as their chances of finishing in the top 5 of the tournament hinge on a victory. The winner of this game will advance to face the victor of the Australia U20 versus New Zealand U20 match, ultimately determining the fifth-place finisher.
Expressing his thoughts on the team’s current situation, head coach Mark Jones acknowledged the critical nature of the contest, stating, “We’re in that knockout scenario now, we’re going to be fighting for that fifth-ranking opportunity. We want to give ourselves the best chance of fighting for that fifth and sixth spot final and we feel the selection keeps some cohesion within the group while freshening it up in a few positions as well.” Jones displayed confidence in the potential of his players but stressed the importance of executing their strategies effectively.
Jones further emphasized that the forthcoming match would be a battle of styles, with the weather expected to play a role. Although conditions are predicted to be acceptable, some dampness in the coming days may impact the gameplay. The head coach emphasized the significance of the players’ passion and their desire to secure a shot at finishing fifth in the tournament.
Reflecting on the team’s performance so far, Jones acknowledged that while they have achieved a victory and delivered strong showings in phases, they are still waiting for a complete performance. He expressed hope that this match would be the breakthrough moment, stating, “We’re hoping all the time that this is the one.”
As the tension builds, Pembrokeshire’s very own Archie Hughes, along with his fellow teammates, will take to the field with determination and fervor to secure a pivotal win against Georgia U20. Their sights are firmly set on securing a place in the top 5 of the U20 World Rugby Championship, demonstrating their skill and resilience on an international stage.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
