Quins dominate Pembroke
WITH the Christmas and New Year festivities over, Pembroke Dock Harlequins U16’s entertained the friendly crowd with some powerful running rugby, and opened the score with a well worked try for pacey winger Ieuan Jenkins via a cross kick taken out wide. The Quins’ forwards powered on with dominance, and The Quins’ backs let loose with a powerful and commanding display by the beefy centre partnership of Arron Boswell and Hywel Baker.
Young Boswell was spurred on by the vocal support from his Granddad and rugby legend, Ossie Boswell, who was pleased to see the family tradition of only forwards being finally broken! Pembroke rallied well and pressed The Quins’ defence at times, and after a reshuffle in teams they finally crossed the line to score. The Quins were soon back on the attack, and Josh Watters (number 8) picked up at the base and made a surging touchline sprint that even the great George North would have been proud of, before diving over to score in the corner.
New signing, Gareth ‘Sparky’ James looked sharp under the high ball and attacked well on the wing, coming close to scoring in the corner. It was great to see two local sides all looking to play good running Rugby throughout with the Quins always in control. The Quins’ line out and scrum dominated throughout and allowed the coaches to move some of the players about and try out some new combinations. Pembroke never gave up and made some great yards through determined pick and go forward play, but a stout Quins defence kept them at bay.
The match referee was Mr Charley Watts, who officiated the game in good free-flowing spirit. The Quins forwards: Tom Watson, Tom Barrass, Tommy Clarkson, Tom Rowe, Matthew Washbourne, Jordan Middleton, Jordan Davies, Jordan Palmer, Josh Watters, Joe Gray & Scott Treyhern.
Backs: Ollie Lewis, Will Nicot, Aaron Cookson, Hywel Baker, Arron Boswell, Ieuan Jenkins, Ben Lascelles, Andrew Skone, Leighton Heart and Gareth “Sparky” James. The Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC are also delighted for three of their U16’s Players, who have recently been selected for the Scarlet’s U16’s West Squad. The Scarlet’s West Squad will be competing in the U16’s regional structure against: North Wales, Cardiff, Swansea, Newport & Scarlet’s East.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
