Top squash back in county
THE MEADS SQUASH CLUB are back in the premiership following a fantastic season.
The club, under SWRB R.D.O and Coach Pete Crook, has had a 2 year plan to rejuvenate squash in the county and provide the highest level of squash possible for any player in the county wishing to progress forward on a pathway.
To achieve this a new team was formed 18 months ago, MLC 1, and this team had a core of seven committed players that wanted to improve their standard of squash and gain promotion to the higher South Wales leagues.
A coaching plan was implemented to include both on court and off court work, the off court work entailed a weekly fitness session. These sessions are open to any and all Pembrokeshire players.
The team won the spring 2014 Pembrokeshire Division 1 league to gain promotion to the higher South Wales Division 2.
The training was pushed forward over the summer and the players put a lot of hard work in both on and off court. This work meant they were starting the winter 2014 season match ready.
Without their No 1 player, the team won Pembrokeshire Division 1 by 48 points and an impressive South Wales Division 2 west by 50 points to gain promotion to South Wales Division 1 west.
James Walters re-joined the side and he helped the team win Pembrokeshire Division 1 by 53 points and South Wales Division 1 west by 27 points, a fantastic achievement.
Our other sides also benefited from the training programs our MLC Geriatrics team won Pembrokeshire Division 2 with 12 straight wins.
They entered a full junior side into the Pembrokeshire league for the winter season but despite coming bottom they gained valuable match experience.
The 5 core players that will make up the premier side going forward will be Nick Dyer (Haverfordwest), James Walters (MLC), Jonny Leigh (Narbeth), John Mammet (Narbeth) and Will Beresford (MLC).
They also intend to field another side in the South Wales League Division 2 to give them a full pathway for both adult and junior players.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
