Withybush: Bigger and better plan for hospital cancer services
THE HEALTH BOARD has announced plans to locate a new Chemotherapy Day Unit in the location of Withybush’s Ward 5 and the former Special Care Baby Unit.
The plan supersedes a previous plan to locate the Unit on the same floor as Ward 10, where cancer patients receive inpatient treatment.
Speaking exclusively to The Herald, Deputy Chief Executive Joe Teape and Interim Hospital Clinical Lead Dr Iain Robertson-Steel said that the change of plan was part of a long term plan to re-organise the way in which clinical services were delivered at Withybush affecting the whole hospital, not only cancer services.
Dr Robertson Steel said: “We believe by allocating this space for the CDU we can develop a really attractive environment in which to provide chemotherapy for our local patients, whilst also maximising use of a prime medical location for medical beds for our population.
“We are now seeking the views of staff and stakeholders as we want to move forward with this development as soon as possible and fulfil our commitment to the public we serve and whom have waited so long for this.”
Whilst the new scheme does reduce the size of the CDU from the original scheme, when combined with the refurbishment of Ward 10 during a later phase, the overall space for oncology services will actually be greater than the original scheme, and far greater than the current footprint.

Tigers second division Cup Champions
In a thrilling Pembrokeshire Division Two Cup final under the floodlights of Bridge Meadow Stadium, fans witnessed an epic battle between Monkton Swifts reserves and Johnston. Despite Monkton Swifts reserves being touted as favorites, Johnston proved their mettle from the outset.
The game kicked off with a burst of energy as Johnston’s center half, Craig Bendall, seized an early opportunity to put his team ahead just ten minutes into the match. However, Monkton Swifts’ prolific Scotsman, Davis, swiftly responded with an equalizer, showcasing the resilience of the favourites.
The momentum shifted again when the dynamic duo of Alfie and Scott Crawford of Johnston orchestrated a beautifully executed goal, putting Johnston back in the lead at 2-1.
As the game progressed, Monkton Swifts brought in reinforcements, including Ben Steele, to regain control. Their efforts paid off when Jordan Kilby leveled the score at 2-2 with just under 20 minutes remaining.
But the Crawfords had other plans. Combining once more, Scott provided the assist for Alfie, who coolly finished to put Johnston ahead once again.
With time running out, Monkton Swifts launched a relentless onslaught in search of an equalizer. However, Johnston’s defense held firm, defying the odds to clinch the Division Two Cup title in a memorable victory.
