Sea Cadet Gus Bingham: Gus travelled to Weymouth and Yeovilton as part of the course

A FISHGUARD Sea Cadet recently attended the Bronze Wings Flying Course hosted at the Sea Cadet Training Centre in Weymouth and at the Royal Naval Air Station in Yeovilton.

During the week-long course, Cadet Gus Bingham studied a variety of impressive skills such as Principles of Flight, Meteorology, Navigation, Human Factors, Aviation Law and Radio Telephoney. The Cadets also learned about the history of the Fleet Air Arm.

At the Yeovilton Air Station, Gus got the chance to fly in a Grob Tutor T1 Aircraft, which is what the Navy Pilots first learn to fly in.

Able Cadet Bingham said: “Flying is amazing, especially in the Grob Tutor as you can see all around and the earth looks completely different.

“Tim, my instructor, taught me how to bank and I flew! Then came the aerobatics – we did loops and barrel rolls, which was really cool. I even did it myself, which is hard as you have to concentrate whilst upside down.”

Gus is the first Cadet from Fishguard to have the chance to attend the course and achieve his Bronze Wings. He hopes to go forward to the Silver Wings course in May, where he will be flying from Lee on Solent in Gosport.

Locally grown early potatoes arrive in stores as farmers begin lifting the first Pembrokeshire crop of 2026

PEMBROKESHIRE’S famous new potato season has officially begun, with the first crop of locally grown potatoes being harvested and delivered to shops across the county.

Farmers at Norton Farm began lifting the first Pembrokeshire new potatoes of the year this week, with the freshly harvested crop expected to reach local stores by Friday morning.

The arrival of Pembrokeshire new potatoes marks the unofficial start of the county’s summer growing season and is eagerly anticipated by shoppers keen to enjoy one of Wales’ best-loved seasonal foods.

Photographs shared by the farm show workers hand-picking potatoes from freshly turned soil as machinery lifted the crop from fields overlooking the Pembrokeshire countryside.

The potatoes, prized for their distinctive flavour and soft skins, benefit from the county’s mild climate and coastal growing conditions.

Brian Llewelyn a’i Ferched shared the news on social media, telling customers: “Arriving with us this afternoon!!!!” as excitement builds around the first deliveries.

Locally grown Pembrokeshire new potatoes are expected to be available in selected shops from around 10:00am on Friday.

For many in Pembrokeshire, the arrival of the first new potatoes is a sign that summer is just around the corner — and that it is finally time to get the butter on.

Fence posts thrown into field damage farming equipment

POLICE are appealing for information after fence posts were removed and thrown into a field between Croesgoch and Llanrhian.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the alleged criminal damage happened sometime between Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

The posts, which were next to woodland between the two villages, were removed from the ground and thrown into a nearby field.

They later became lodged in farming equipment, causing significant damage.

Police said the area is only accessible via a footpath.

Claire Archibald vows to ‘stand up for rural Wales’ after Senedd election victory

New MS says every constituent enquiry will be taken seriously as she opens doors to public

NEWLY elected Senedd Member Claire Archibald has pledged to be “available to all constituents” across Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion after formally taking up her role representing the region.

Archibald, who was elected earlier this month, said she was “deeply grateful” to everyone who had placed their trust in her and promised to work hard on behalf of communities across west Wales.

In a statement issued following her election, the new MS said she intended to keep her offices open and accessible, with a focus on helping residents with day-to-day concerns.

Claire Archibald said: “I am honoured to have been selected as a representative for Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who placed their trust in me.

“I want to be available to all constituents who need my support. My offices will be open, and every enquiry will be taken seriously. I will do my very best to help every single person here in our beautiful corner of Wales.”

Archibald said she entered politics because she believed Wales was “heading in the wrong direction” and wanted to help protect communities, family values and frontline services.

She added: “Above all, I want to make sure Cardiff Bay understands that rural communities matter too.”

Her comments are likely to resonate with many voters in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, where issues including healthcare access, farming pressures, transport links and cost-of-living concerns featured heavily during the Senedd election campaign.

Archibald joins the new intake of representatives following the first election held under Wales’ expanded Senedd system, with Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion now represented under the larger multi-member constituency model.
