Pembroke Dock: Roadworks stalled due to ‘software issue’

DRIVERS and pedestrians in Pembroke Dock have been left frustrated after roadworks on the A477 London Road appear to have stalled.

Work began on February 5 to redevelop the junction with Ferry Lane by introducing pedestrian crossings, new street lighting and traffic signals.

The work was scheduled to take 17 weeks according to Pembrokeshire Council and the South Wales Trunk Road Agency (SWTRA).

24 weeks on and no significant work has taken place for several weeks.

Newly-installed traffic signals remain covered with orange tarpaulin and the array of new street lights have no bulbs.

This week, The Pembrokeshire Herald contacted SWTRA for an explanation, who responded with a statement saying: “Work is progressing on this site, although a software issue with the traffic signal controller has meant that the full work to improve this stretch has been delayed whilst this issue is resolved. ”

“We anticipate this being very shortly and engineers are standing by.”

It is understood there are issues with computer software used to control the new traffic signals.

Pembroke Dock councillor Joshua Beynon told the Herald that he received an email from SWTRA on July 2 citing a number of other issues which have led to work stopping – due to a ‘safety alert’ with the street lights, alternative ones are being procured.

SWTRA also blamed bad weather for the delays, even though Pembrokeshire has been enjoying dry and fine weather almost every day since early May.

SWTRA also apologised to Cllr Beynon for damage one of its contractors, Tarmac, caused to a cemetery wall. Tarmac has been dealing with the cemetery manager, James Allen, to get it repaired.

On Tuesday (Jul 24), the Herald spoke with SWTRA by phone and they advised us not to run this article because the works would be ‘completed’ by the time we went to press.

Council warns of icy conditions as temperatures drop

ROAD users in Pembrokeshire are being urged to exercise caution tonight as temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing.

Pembrokeshire County Council has announced that road surface temperatures could reach as low as -2°C, with the possibility of sleet or snow on higher ground. In response, precautionary salting of the county’s primary routes will be carried out this evening and overnight.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Road users are advised to take care if travelling on untreated roads.”

Motorists are reminded to plan ahead and drive carefully, particularly in areas that may not have been treated.
