Popular Pembrokeshire pub offers £500 bonus to attract staff for busy summer season
THE GOLDEN LION, a well-known pub located in Newport, Pembrokeshire, near the picturesque west Wales coast, is facing a staffing shortage ahead of an expected surge in visitors over the coming months. In an effort to attract new employees, the pub has announced a generous incentive of a £500 bonus on top of wages for those willing to work at the establishment.
Nestled in the heart of Newport village, The Golden Lion is conveniently situated just a stone’s throw away from the local beach and other popular attractions, including the renowned Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. As the village gears up for its peak season, which draws thousands of tourists from across Wales and the rest of the UK for their summer holidays, the pub anticipates a significant increase in footfall and a bustling atmosphere.
With this in mind, the management of The Golden Lion has devised a hiring strategy that includes offering both new and existing staff a substantial bonus. To qualify for the £500 bonus, individuals must commit to working an average of 35 hours per week over a period of 10 weeks. The incentive extends to employees across various roles within the pub, including front of house, housekeeping, and kitchen staff. Notably, The Golden Lion has gained recognition for its quality service and was featured on WalesOnline’s prestigious list of the “Best pubs in Wales” for 2023.
Explaining the reasoning behind the incentive, the pub management stated, “As we are approaching our busy spring and summer season, we are recruiting for various roles, front of house, housekeeping, and kitchen. We have full-time and part-time positions available. Our minimum age is 16, and we look for candidates with either a proven track record in hospitality or a strong willingness to learn and provide excellent customer service. Given the high demand during the summer months, we are offering a £500 bonus payment to both new and existing staff who work an average of more than 35 hours over the ten-week summer period.”
The Golden Lion’s offer presents an attractive opportunity for job seekers to join a renowned establishment in a beautiful coastal location, while also benefiting from a substantial financial incentive. With the hospitality sector experiencing staffing challenges nationwide, this creative approach by The Golden Lion demonstrates their commitment to ensuring excellent customer experiences during the bustling summer season.
Individuals interested in exploring employment opportunities at The Golden Lion are encouraged to contact the pub directly to learn more about available positions and the hiring process. With the prospect of a vibrant and busy summer ahead, both the pub and potential staff members stand to benefit from this mutually rewarding arrangement.

Ferry Terminal ‘extremely busy’ due to ongoing Holyhead closure
PEMBROKE DOCK Ferry Terminal has been experiencing significant congestion today as ferry services remain under immense pressure following the closure of Holyhead Port earlier this month.
The disruption, caused by storm damage, has rerouted ferry traffic through Pembrokeshire, leading to long queues and crowded facilities at the terminal.
The Herald can confirm that it has been very busy today with cars, lorries, and foot passengers queuing in large numbers. Staff are working tirelessly to manage the influx, directing vehicles and assisting passengers as they prepare to board the heavily booked ferries.
A spokesperson for the Port of Milford Haven said: “We are working closely with ferry operators and local authorities to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible, but the sheer volume of vehicles is causing unavoidable delays.”
Travelers are being urged to arrive early for their sailings and to remain patient as the terminal operates at full capacity.
Both Stena Line and Irish Ferries have increased capacity on their Pembrokeshire routes, deploying larger vessels, including the Stena Adventurer and the MV James Joyce, to handle the surge in demand.
From our position at the terminal, our photographer has captured photos showing long lines of vehicles, groups of foot passengers carrying luggage, and port staff coordinating efforts to ease congestion.
Authorities are advising non-essential travelers to consider rescheduling their journeys where possible and to monitor updates from ferry operators closely.

Festive celebrations at St Davids Cathedral this weekend
ST DAVIDS Cathedral is set to host two special events on Sunday (Dec 22), offering a blend of joyful participation and traditional carol singing to mark the Christmas season.
In the morning, families are invited to the Scratch Nativity at 11:00am. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as wise men, angels, sheep, or shepherds and take part in an unrehearsed retelling of the Christmas story. Canon Leigh described the event as: “Complete, wonderful chaos for an hour… but with some poignant, thought-provoking moments to centre ourselves on the real meaning of Christmas.”
Later in the evening, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight will take place at 7:00pm, featuring the Cathedral Choir. The event, steeped in tradition, will see the cathedral bathed in candlelight as carols and scripture readings fill the historic space.
Doors will open at 5:45pm for those seeking unreserved seating, and a large turnout is expected for this beloved Christmas celebration.
