Vikings come from behind
Hakin United 5
Pengelli United 1
HAKIN UNITED came from a goal down to beat Pengelli United by five goals to one to progress to the third round of the FAW Trophy. The Carmarthenshire Premier League outfit started the game well and went close when Mark Bier’s dangerous cross was well cleared away by Steve Allen.
With fifteen minutes gone Pengelli took the lead when Luke Rees flicked the ball on a goal kick to Peter Lewis and his stunning volley flew over the keeper and into the net. Hakin could have been level just two minutes later but Ashley Bevan’s shot flew just over the bar. Pengelli were playing well and caused problems at the back for Hakin and they were lucky not to be two goals down when Peter Lewis closed down James Manson’s clearance but the keeper got back well to stop Lewis’s shot from going in.
Hakin responded well and were inches away from equalising but Matthew Broome’s shot bounced back off the post and away to safety. The whistle went with Pengelli still leading but Hakin posed the greater threat going forward. The Vikings started the second half well and within ten minutes they had turned the game on its head. Firstly, Gareth Fawcett flicked on a throw in and Jonathan Bennett was in the right place to knock the ball into the net. Then just two minutes later Hakin took the lead thanks to a brilliant strike from Steve Mathias whose shot curled into the top corner.
Peter Lewis then saw a shot deflected narrowly over before Hakin added a third goal. Allen floated in a free kick and Fawcett headed the ball down for Adam Davies to tap in despite calls for offside. The Vikings continued to dominate and they made it 4-1 with fifteen minutes to go when Davies played in Bevan who fired the ball home. Then with nine minutes to go they had their fifth goal as Bevan crossed into the box and Justin Harding ran in to knock the ball into the net at the back post.
The Vikings will be pleased with their second half performance and will look forward to the third round draw of the FAW Trophy. Hakin Team: James Manson, Ewan Findlay, Gareth Fawcett, Steve Allen, Steve Mathias, Matthew Broome, Jonathan Bennett, Ashley Bevan, Adam Davies, Justin Harding. Subs: Andrew Kingston, Nathan Banner, Dan Evans, Aaron Owens

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
