New supermarket scheme submitted to Pembrokeshire planners

Published

on

AN APPLICATION to demolish a Pembrokeshire supermarket, replacing it with a more modern facility, has been submitted to county planners.

Lidl Great Britain Limited is seeking to demolish the existing Lidl foodstore and adjoining properties at Great North Road, Milford Haven, building a new Lidl foodstore with associated works.

A supporting statement through agent CarneySweeney says: “The existing Lidl store is small and of an early generation format. Owing to Lidl’s well-established and growing local customer base, Lidl has outgrown its existing premises which no longer meets modern shopper requirements, and a larger store is sought to better serve local customer demand.

“In addition, the existing store is inefficient with regards to warehouse operations. The proposal for a new store aims to alleviate the problems presented by the existing store.”

It adds: “The development is suitably scaled to be no larger than necessary to address identified storage and staff needs and improve the existing store. Moreover, the new store will be better equipped to meet Lidl’s operational requirements, modern day staff requirements and better serve local shopping needs.

“The proposed sales floor space is modest and is not anticipated to lead to any material change in existing shopping patterns. The store will continue to trade on a like for like basis with other large food stores; the majority of which lie out of centre. Based on a quantitative assessment of trading effects no significant adverse impact on in centre turnover and trade is anticipated.”

The application says the development would create up to 40 jobs.

It concludes: “The proposed new Lidl store strives to reduce environmental impact, both through design and through the commitment of Lidl to follow best practice to reduce pollution during the construction phase.”

The application will be considered by Pembrokeshire County council planners at a later date.

Emergency services attend overturned milk tanker in Narberth

Published

EMERGENCY services responded to an overturned milk tanker along the B4314 in Narberth on Monday afternoon (Jul 1).

Three fire engines, ambulance and police were dispatched to the incident.

The driver was assisted out of the vehicle, and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

A local farmer helped firefighters to block the milk seeping from the tanker into a nearby stream.

Police assisted with traffic control whilst the operation was ongoing.

A Spokesperson for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service told The Pembrokeshire Herald: “At 3.49pm on Monday, July 1st, crews from Narberth, Pembroke Dock and Whitland Fire Stations were called to an incident along the B4314 in Narberth.

“Crews responded to an overturned milk tanker containing approximately 20,000 litres of milk. Crews assisted the driver out of the vehicle who was then assessed by on-scene paramedics and conveyed to hospital by road ambulance.

“Crews and a local farmer blocked the flow of milk spilling from the vehicle from entering the watercourse.

“Natural Resources Wales was informed of the incident and the milk company attended the scene to decant the remaining milk from the overturned tanker to another. Dyfed-Powys Police was also in attendance and the road was closed during the incident and the vehicle’s recovery.

“MAWWFRS crews left the scene at 7.33pm.”

Jobs confidence in Wales pushing up pay expectations

Published

on

WORKERS across Wales are showing above-average confidence in their job prospects, with pay expectations set to increase as a result. That’s according to the latest Robert Half Jobs Confidence Index (JCI) – an economic confidence tracker produced in partnership with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr).

The data revealed that two-thirds (66%) of Welsh workers are confident in their job over the next six months, above the national average of 60%. This optimism is translating into heightened pay inflation expectations, with workers across the country indicating hopes of an average pay rise of 4.6% this year, above the national average of 3.8%.

Interestingly, though, fewer employees in Wales suggested that they would take some form of action – such as seeking a new role in their current business or changing employers – than the national average. Less than half (43%) of Welsh workers would take action if a salary increase wasn’t an option this year, compared to 68% of UK respondents overall.

James Fortnam, Market Director, Wales, Ireland & Scotland at Robert Half, commented: “Job confidence across Wales is clearly high and there are likely a number of reasons for this. Growing skills shortages coupled with the recent reports that the country has the highest rate of economic inactivity are no doubt leading to staff feeling optimistic about demand for their skills. While this has created an environment where pay rise expectations are higher than the national average, employers can be somewhat comforted by the fact that fewer people are likely to take direct action if they don’t receive the salary increase they are after. Of course, that doesn’t mean that businesses can ignore these high levels of confidence. Instead, it should be a catalyst for firms to consider their holistic employment packages and how elements such as tailored benefits packages or career progression programmes can act as more effective attraction tools.”
