Ken Morris Cup Final: Neyland 3rds vs. Narberth 3rds
THE picturesque Narberth Cricket Club once again played host to the annual Ken Morris Memorial Cup Final, offering a day brimming with excitement and local cricketing prowess. This year, the finals featured two captivating matches that showcased the enduring talent within Pembrokeshire’s cricketing community.
Narberth 3rds Triumph Over Neyland 3rds
In the first final, Narberth 3rds squared off against Neyland 3rds in what proved to be a one-sided affair. Neyland, having secured a place in the final after a convincing win against Cresselly earlier in the day, struggled to find their footing against a disciplined Narberth bowling attack.
Neyland won the toss and elected to bat, but their innings faltered as they managed just 72 runs before being bowled out. Opener Rod Murphy (14), Eli Owen (14), and Leo Power (10) were the only batsmen to reach double figures, with Loui Davies wreaking havoc with the ball. Davies’ exceptional spell of 6-12 from five overs, supported by Elliot Evans’ 3-9, left Neyland reeling.
Chasing a modest target of 73, Narberth’s Loui Davies continued his fine form, scoring an unbeaten 37. Despite brief resistance from Neyland’s veteran bowler Lloyd, who dismissed Keane for a duck and Jordan Williams for 9, Narberth cruised to victory with Ryan Williams adding a steady 14 not out. Davies’ all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match award, as Narberth claimed a comfortable win.
Haverfordwest 3rds Overcome Neyland 3rds in a Tense Encounter
The second final of the day saw Haverfordwest 3rds clinch their sixth consecutive Ken Morris Memorial Cup title, defeating Neyland 3rds by nine wickets. The match, played under overcast conditions, was a showcase of resilience and tactical brilliance.
Haverfordwest skipper Paul Maggs won the toss and elected to bowl. His decision paid off immediately, with Neyland’s George Evans falling for a diamond duck to the first ball of the match. Despite a slow start, Neyland managed to post 90 for 6 in their first innings, thanks to a determined 31 from Gavin Rowland and a hard-hitting 41 from John Tennick.
Haverfordwest’s chase of 91 was anchored by a crucial partnership between Dai Davies and Filgi Varghese. The duo put on an unbeaten 93-run stand, with Davies scoring a fluent 46 not out and Varghese contributing 48 not out. Their efforts ensured that Haverfordwest reached the target with two overs to spare, securing a nine-wicket victory.
In Neyland’s second innings, they set a challenging target of 105 after being bowled out for 129. However, another solid partnership between Davies and Varghese saw Haverfordwest comfortably chase down the total. Varghese, who also took four wickets in the first innings, was named Man of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance.
The day concluded with a post-match presentation, where organiser Richard Howell thanked all involved for their efforts. The trophy was handed to Haverfordwest skipper Paul Maggs by the family of Ken Morris, marking another successful year for the Ken Morris Memorial Cup.
The finals were a fitting tribute to the spirit of local cricket, with Narberth and Haverfordwest emerging as deserving champions, showcasing the depth of talent in the region.

Exciting round of rugby fixtures across divisions this weekend
THIS weekend promises an exciting round of fixtures across divisions, with several teams eager to bounce back from last week’s defeats while others look to maintain their momentum.
We start our rugby weekly preview in Division Two, where Fishguard will be riding high after a commanding 53-12 victory over Milford in last week’s Pembrokeshire derby. They’ll aim to extend their strong start when they host Nantgaredig, a side who suffered a heavy defeat last week. With home advantage and their current form, Fishguard will be hopeful of securing another win.
Milford, on the other hand, will be desperate to turn things around following their heavy loss. They travel to face Loughor, hoping for a much-improved performance and a chance to get their season up and running.
Into Division Three where Haverfordwest opened their season with a nail-biting one-point victory over Cardigan two weeks ago. It was a win that showcased their grit and determination, but they’ll face a different challenge this weekend when they travel to Llangadog. Llangadog, who were comfortably beaten by Aberaeron last week, will be keen to put up a stronger fight on home turf.
In Division 4 West, Fresh off an impressive victory over local rivals Llangwm, Neyland will host Teirw Crymych. The visitors, from the north of the county, are coming off a tough loss to Narberth’s second string and will be eager to register their first win of the season. The All Blacks, buoyed by last week’s triumph, will want to build on their momentum on their own patch.
The Wasps, after a disappointing showing in the derby, will be looking for redemption when they travel to face Llanybyddee. Llangwm will need a far stronger performance to claim their first win of the season.
Meanwhile, Pembroke will look to recover from their derby defeat last weekend as they host St. David’s. Pembroke will be seeking a morale-boosting win, but they face a formidable opponent in St. David’s, who were highly impressive last season and will be out to make a statement on the road.
With plenty of intriguing matchups, this weekend promises to be full of drama and intensity across the divisions.

Clarbeston Road stuns Monkton Swifts in nine-goal thriller
ANOTHER thrilling weekend of football in Pembrokeshire’s First Division unfolded with late drama aplenty. The standout fixture took place at Clarbeston Road, where they narrowly won a nine-goal thriller, while Goodwick United faced a stiff test against Tenby. The Vikings continued their impressive start to the season, as the newly promoted teams struggled to find their footing once more.
Clarbeston Road 5-4 Monkton Swifts
The match of the weekend was at Clarbeston Road, where a remarkable comeback saw the hosts overturn a 4-1 deficit with just 15 minutes left on the clock to beat Monkton Swifts. Jack Clarke’s brace and a goal from Ben Steele had the Swifts cruising at half-time. Despite an early second-half goal from Jake Wesley for Clarbeston, Liam Butland’s strike restored Monkton’s three-goal cushion. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Laurie Haworth scored twice, Ben John added another, and Travis Jones netted a stoppage-time winner, completing a comeback that will be remembered for years.
Carew 2-3 Merlins Bridge
Merlins Bridge avenged last week’s defeat with a 3-2 win over Carew. Captain Jordan Thomas put the Wizards ahead before Marcus Griffiths equalised for the hosts. Late goals from Liam Manwaring and Tom Jago gave Merlins Bridge a 3-1 lead, rendering Leon Davies’ last-minute goal a mere consolation for Carew.
Herbrandston 1-5 Milford United
Scott Reid shone against his former club, scoring four goals as Milford United thrashed Herbrandston 5-1. Reid’s goals came on either side of an equaliser from Adam Whatling. Rhys Brawn added a fourth for Milford before Reid sealed the rout with a fourth, assisted by Morgan Picton. Herbrandston are struggling to adapt to First Division life, languishing at the bottom of the table without a point, while Milford United sit comfortably in third place.
Kilgetty 1-3 Hakin United
Hakin United, the Vikings, maintained their top-of-the-table status with a solid 3-1 win over Kilgetty. The hosts took an early lead through Lloyd Hughes, but Hakin responded with a goal from Justin Harding. A long-range strike from Alfie Stotter and late goals from Leo Power and Shane Walsh ensured victory for the visitors.
Pennar Robins 2-1 St Ishmaels
Pennar Robins edged past St Ishmaels 2-1, thanks to two first-half goals from Cameron Brunton and Nick Willis, both set up by Dan James. Joel Mills pulled one back for the visitors, but Pennar held firm to secure their second win of the season. St Ishmaels remain without a point, sitting second from bottom.
Tenby 1-2 Goodwick United
Defending champions Goodwick United completed a late comeback to beat Tenby 2-1, courtesy of two goals from Will Haworth. Richard Perry had given Tenby the lead, set up by Ned Davies. Haworth equalised in the 84th minute and then clinched the winner deep into stoppage time. The victory was tainted for Tenby, who saw both Joe Leahy and Charlie Gregory sent off after the final whistle. This match shows that while Goodwick are still strong, they appear more vulnerable than last season.
