Worst storm of winter expected as ‘extraordinary’ weather heads to UK
A STORM driven by a jet stream of “extraordinary strength” is set to bring disruptive weather to the UK this weekend, forecasters warn. The cold wave currently sweeping across North America is heading east, intensifying as it moves into the Atlantic.
The jet stream is forecast to strengthen to winds of up to 250mph, significantly impacting weather patterns. According to BBC Weather, this powerful system will intensify throughout the week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and unsettled conditions to the UK.
Jet stream powers intense storm system
BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes explained: “North America has been experiencing very cold weather, which will power an extremely strong jet stream—one of the strongest I’ve ever seen. Winds in this system could reach 250mph, enabling fast transatlantic flights but also powering a deep area of low pressure.”
Fawkes added: “The low-pressure system will bring winds exceeding 100mph over the sea to the west of the UK. While the strongest winds are expected to remain offshore, we should prepare for gales, heavy rain, and unsettled weather starting Friday.”
Met Office predicts wetter, windier conditions
The Met Office long-range forecast highlights a transition to a more changeable and unsettled weather pattern from Thursday (Jan 23) through early February. A spokesperson said: “Rain and freshening winds are expected from the southwest by Thursday, becoming more widespread by the weekend. The rest of the month looks likely to feature periods of rain and showers, often accompanied by strong winds.”
Temperatures are predicted to recover to near or slightly above average levels. However, due to the stormy conditions, it “might not feel like it at times,” forecasters said.
Potential for a named storm
Forecasters are monitoring the system closely, with a potential for weather warnings or even the naming of a storm if conditions worsen. The Met Office advises the public to stay updated on forecasts as the week progresses.
Prepare for a weekend of severe weather as this extraordinary jet stream brings its impact to the UK. Stay safe and take necessary precautions.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
