Team of the week: Cilgerran Rovers

IT has now been 18 months since Martin Williams was approached by various young adults of the village to reform a football club.

With help from Sam De’ath, Martin put the idea into motion and reintroduced Cilgerran Rovers senior team to the Costcutter League after an absence of 11 years.

Throughout the initial set up, the club was indebted to all the local businesses, organisations and individuals for their help, advice and donations, including last season’s team sponsor E and M Motor Factors.

Throughout the 2012-2013 season the newly formed club ‘held their own’ against some strong competition and this was noted when they reached the quarter finals of the South Cards Cup. Finishing the season in 9th place has given the team something to improve on and this year they have already achieved this by staying firmly in the upper echelons of the table.

Cilgerran Rovers senior team have helped with numerous community events, including assisting Cilgerran Festive Week during this summer’s festivities, during Harvest Festival in the church and perhaps more importantly playing a charity match as part of Kieran Sabiston-Williams Fun Day.

The team are excited by the impending visit of the Ground Hoppers, who are an organisation based in Manchester, Birmingham and London and other cities in the UK, who are visiting on March 8, 2014. They intend to use their visit as an insight, not only for the football played, but also a taste of the community, and they would like to invite everyone to join them when there will be plenty of food, drinks, entertainment, supporter merchandise and fun.

This will be a large event, and they would welcome any volunteers to help with cooking, serving and traffic control during the days leading up to the event. Should you want to help, please contact Liz Williams on (01239) 615500.

This season the club were kindly donated a new kit from sponsor Paul Edwards Ltd and for this they would like to express their thanks, and also to Francine Barber of the Masons Arms for serving the ‘after match’ refreshments.

There is one final person the club needs to thank and that is the late Mark Patterson, for his coaching on the team, enthusiasm and his advice. You are sorely missed Mark

Rain halts most action as Pembs cricket battles the weather

Only a handful of matches completed as showers cause widespread disruption across all divisions

THE WEAETHER won the battle across much of Pembrokeshire cricket on Saturday (May 16), with abandoned matches dominating the fourth week of the Pembroke County Cricket League season.

Only a small number of fixtures reached a result, although there were still impressive individual performances and significant movement in the league tables.

Division 1: Carew stay top despite washout

Rain interrupted almost every match in Division 1, with no full fixtures completed.

Carew remain top of the table after taking four points from their abandoned clash with Whitland, while Saundersfoot and Neyland continue to keep the pressure on.

Division 2: Haverfordwest cruise to nine-wicket win

The only completed match in Division 2 saw Haverfordwest ease to a nine-wicket victory over Llangwm.

Chris Phillips starred with both bat and ball, taking 4-36 before smashing 71 as Haverfordwest chased 142 with ease.

Division 3: Laugharne impress before rain arrives

Laugharne looked in control at Kilgetty thanks to an unbeaten 61 from Matt Tait before the weather intervened.

Elsewhere, Burton II made a strong start against Haverfordwest II, reaching 43 without loss before rain stopped play.

Division 4: Narberth II earn biggest win of the day

Narberth II secured one of the weekend’s few completed victories with a 42-run win over Llechryd II.

Ceri Davies smashed 76 while Richard Howell starred with the ball, taking 4-12.

Crymych also impressed before rain halted play against Lawrenny II, reaching 146-3 thanks to Rhys Davies’ unbeaten 73.

Division 5: Whitland II pile on the runs

Whitland II posted the highest score of the weekend, smashing 256-2 before rain ended play against Llanrhian II.

Steffan Lee (61*) and Matt Driver (67*) were in fine form.

Llechryd III also impressed, reaching 160-4 thanks to Andrew Davies’ unbeaten 69.

Division 6: Whitland III romp home

Whitland III claimed the most emphatic result of the weekend, skittling Kilgetty II for just 17 before knocking off the target for the loss of one wicket.

Ben Rodea (3-8) and Sion Benjamin (2-8) starred with the ball.

Haverfordwest/Cresselly also picked up a valuable seven-wicket win over Laugharne II.

Despite the weather chaos, the early league tables are beginning to take shape, with Carew, Johnston, Kilgetty, Narberth II, Cresselly III and Whitland III all setting the early pace in their respective divisions.

Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club to hold next time trial event

MEMBERS of Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club are being encouraged to take part in the club’s next Time Trial Series event.

The 20km bike time trial will take place at Herbrandston, next to the old school, on Sunday, May 17, starting at 8:15am.

The club says the event is open to members of all abilities, whether they are chasing a personal best, building confidence, or simply looking to take part in a friendly club event.

Those wishing to enter are asked to book their place through the Connect My Club app.

Parking at the start is limited, so members are being encouraged to car share where possible or allow extra time before the event.

S4C secures exclusive Barbarians v Wales double-header

S4C will broadcast a live rugby double-header from Twickenham this summer, with Wales taking on the Barbarians in both men’s and women’s fixtures.

The matches will be shown live and exclusively on Friday, June 27, with the men’s game kicking off at 2:00pm and the women’s match following at 5:00pm.

Both fixtures will be available across S4C, S4C Clic, BBC iPlayer and S4C Chwaraeon’s YouTube channel, with Welsh and English-language commentary.

Sarra Elgan will present the coverage, with Lauren Salter reporting pitchside.

Gareth Charles will commentate on the men’s match, with analysis from Ken Owens and Elinor Snowsill. Siwan Lillicrap will also join the team for the women’s fixture, with further members of the broadcast line-up to be announced.

Tomos Grace, WRU Chief Commercial Officer said: “We’re delighted that S4C will bring coverage of Barbarians v Wales at Twickenham to supporters across the country and beyond.

“This fixture is always a celebration of rugby’s spirit and tradition, and it’s fantastic that fans will be able to enjoy it free-to-air, with comprehensive Welsh-language coverage at its heart alongside English provision, which is hugely important for the game in Wales.

“We look forward to what promises to be a memorable summer occasion for Welsh rugby.”

Sue Butler, Head of Sports at S4C, said the broadcaster was pleased to have secured exclusive rights to the event.

She said: “We are delighted to have secured the exclusive broadcast rights to this double-header, bringing Wales together with the Barbarians for a special day of summer rugby.

“These fixtures promise a great Wales day out, and we’re pleased that S4C’s coverage will be available across all platforms.

“This agreement underlines S4C’s commitment to delivering premium live sport exclusively to audiences across Wales and the UK, in both Welsh and English, and to showcasing the very best of international rugby on a global stage.”

John Spencer, President of Barbarian F.C., said: “Barbarian F.C. and Wales have an intertwined history, with supporters of both teams enjoying the spirit and values of the game.

“This summer’s double-header against Wales is a hugely exciting fixture and the announcement that the matches will be on S4C, on free-to-air TV, broadcast by a national broadcaster, with huge rugby experience, is really important.

“We want to showcase the very best of rugby and having the fixtures on S4C will allow us to reach a large audience for what will be a great day of rugby.”

Fans will also be able to attend the double-header at Twickenham, with tickets available through Ticketmaster and England Rugby.

The coverage will be produced by Whisper Cymru.
