Willkommen in Wales
CRICCIETH CASTLE, South Stack Island and the Green Bridge of Wales will brighten up the landscapes of German cities with the launch of a new Visit Wales advertising campaign.
The huge posters of iconic Welsh landmarks will be seen in key sites in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Duisburg and Essen from March 10. The adverts feature key products that are of interest to German visitors, highlighting our culture, heritage and the Wales Coast.
This work is part of a wider campaign in Germany to raise Wales’ profile and inspire visitors to come to Wales in 2015.
A new German website went live in December, along with the publication of the new international brochure, Explore Wales. The campaign includes marketing partnerships with P&O Ferries, Expedia, Hotels.com, Dertour, KLM, DFDS Seaways and Golf Extra. The campaign will also promote the Flybe route from Dusseldorf to Cardiff and the newly announced Flybe Route from Munich.
Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates said: “Germany is one of Wales’s three key overseas markets, along with Ireland and the USA. Visitor numbers from Germany to Wales showed strong growth in 2013, totalling 107,000 visits with expenditure of some £49m. With overseas visitors figures for the first three quarters of 2014 showing a 14% increase on previous years we hope that the recovery experienced in 2013 will be maintained. This campaign will further raise the profile of Wales as a holiday destination and will keep Wales at the front of visitors’ minds during this key holiday booking period in Germany. Partnerships are at the heart of the Welsh government’s strategy for Tourism and they play a vital role in the German campaign. Working with carriers and operators in Germany is of particular importance in highlighting access to Wales and promoting products available in the market via tour operators.”
The campaign launch follows Visit Wales’ attendance at the world’s largest and most important tourism trade fair – ITB Berlin – where Visit Wales met with tour operators, press and media and other important partners from Germany to raise Wales’ profile as a holiday destination. The new campaign is set to stimulate demand for tours, itineraries and routes to Wales which tour operators, agents and carriers have to offer.
Katharina Barry, Product Manager at Dertour, a German tour operator, which met with Visit Wales in ExploreGB and ITB, said: “It’s great to see Visit Wales delivering campaigns to drive awareness in the German market and we are really pleased to be working in partnership with Visit Wales to deliver agent and consumer communications to promote our coach and car tours through Wales as well as independent bookings. I visited Wales in February and I was deeply impressed by the stunning nature and the warm Welsh welcome I received.”

Spitfire latest: Pembrokeshire flypast looks more likely this afternoon
THE LATEST public updates suggest the iconic Spitfire is now expected to leave RAF Valley at around 2:00pm today (Apr 15) after yesterday’s Welsh leg was postponed by bad weather.
That is later than some earlier reports had suggested, with older schedule information pointing to a morning departure before the delay.
Route details linked to the tour still indicate the aircraft is expected to travel around the Welsh coastline on its way to MOD St Athan, meaning Pembrokeshire remains one of the areas most likely to catch a glimpse.
However, timings remain approximate and could still shift depending on weather and operational conditions.
People hoping to see the aircraft should keep an eye on the skies this afternoon rather than this morning.

Doorstep warning issued after reports of suspicious callers in Pembrokeshire
Residents in Haverfordwest and St Davids urged to watch out for vulnerable neighbours after social media alerts
A WARNING has been issued to residents in parts of Pembrokeshire after separate social media reports of suspicious doorstep callers in both Haverfordwest and St Davids.
In Haverfordwest one resident said a man called at his home at around 6:10pm on Tuesday (Apr 14), claiming he was an ex-convict from South Shields selling cheap household goods in an effort to get his life back on track.
The Merlins Bridge resident said the man claimed there was a wider team operating in the area in a similar way. He reported that the caller then knocked at several more homes along Venns Close before heading towards Greenhill Drive and the roundabout.
The man was described as wearing black waterproof trousers and a royal blue waterproof coat, with dark medium-length hair and no hat. He was also said to be carrying a large holdall, possibly containing items for sale.
In a separate post circulating online, residents in St Davids were also warned to be cautious after reports of men wearing backpacks and baseball caps going door-to-door.
The post claimed police had been in the area several times during the day looking for the individuals. Residents were urged to keep doors locked and to contact police if they saw anything suspicious.
While none of the claims have been independently verified by The Herald, the reports have prompted calls for people to remain vigilant, secure doors, gates and vehicles, and check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
Residents suggested the activity may be linked to so-called “Nottingham Knockers”, a term often used to describe cold callers selling goods door-to-door, sometimes amid concerns that vulnerable households may be targeted.
He said he had reported the Haverfordwest incident to Dyfed-Powys Police via the force’s website. The reference number given was CDS-76190-26-6300-002.
Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour is advised to report it to Dyfed-Powys Police.

Bloomfield Nursery gets Rotary boost with new dishwasher
Donation helps save staff hours of washing up at Narberth childcare setting
BLOOMFIELD NURSERY in Narberth has received a welcome helping hand from Narberth & Whitland Rotary, after the club donated a new dishwasher to the childcare setting.
The nursery, which looks after up to 31 children under the age of five each day, has recently moved into new premises. Staff say the donation has already made a real difference to the day-to-day running of the nursery.
The dishwasher was purchased from Vaughans in Haverfordwest and presented to nursery manager Cheryl Crowdy.
Cheryl thanked the Rotary club for its support and said the appliance was already proving invaluable.
She said: “Having this dishwasher has made a huge positive impact by saving many hours of washing up by hand.”
Narberth & Whitland Rotary said it was delighted to be able to support the nursery in such a practical way as it continues to care for young children in the community.
Pictured with Cheryl Crowdy are Rotarian Kenna Crawford, Rotary President Robin Bradbury, and Rotarians Charles Clewett and Phil Thompson MBE.
