Milford Haven: £4,500 fine for estate agent
A MILFORD HAVEN estate agent has been fined over £4,500 after admitting three offences under the Housing Act.
Cardiff Magistrates heard on Thursday (Nov 9) that earlier this year Yvette Phillips, trading as R. Miles Scurlock, White Lodge, 25 Robert Street, was reported as an unregistered landlord and as an unlicensed agent.
Rent Smart Wales – the body which processes landlord registrations and grants licences to landlords and agents – wrote to Phillips on several occasions advising her of her legal obligations to register and licence.
As she had not progressed to submit a completed licence application or register her rental properties, a Fixed Penalty Notice was issued for the offence of failing to licence as an agent June 9.
Phillips did not pay the Fixed Penalty Notice, submit a licence application nor did she register her properties despite a reminder being sent.
A formal notice was sent to Phillips advising her that she would be prosecuted. Again no reply was received.
The court was told that on August 9, Rent Smart Wales again reviewed the case and confirmed that Phillips had still taken no action to comply and was therefore still operating as an unlicensed agent and unregistered landlord.
Again, no reply was received from Phillips in response to the letter informing her a prosecution would be instigated. Subsequently, a summons was served for her to appear before Cardiff Magistrates Court.
In mitigation, Phillips was apologetic and gave an assurancet that she would work with both Rent Smart Wales and the Housing Standards team at Pembrokeshire County Council, and be fully compliant within the next two weeks.
The court fined Phillips £4,600 for the three offences and ordered her to pay court costs of £671 and a £170 victim surcharge.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
