Vikings set up Carew semi

Published

on

HAKIN UNITED booked a Senior Cup semi-final tie with Carew as they battled to a 2-0 win away to Neyland on Saturday (Feb 17).

The third round game had been rearranged on a number of occasions due to the bad weather and after switching the game to the Athletic Ground, the game finally got underway.

It was a tense first half with neither side creating any real clear-cut scoring chances and the game remained goalless at half time.

In the second half however, Hakin kept the pressure on the Neyland goal and they were eventually rewarded with the opening goal.

A cross from the right found Daniel Armstrong in the box and he headed the ball back across goal and into the net.

Moments later, another cross from Ben Aldred caused panic in the box and the ball was inadvertently knocked into his own net by Nick Koomen.

Neyland also defended well as they cleared one effort off the line in a bid to keep themselves in the game.

Hakin saw the remainder of the game out comfortably to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

That game with Carew will take place at the Bridge Meadow Stadium on Wednesday, February 28, and kicks off at 7pm.

Before that there will be a dress rehearsal for the semi-final as Hakin travel to Carew for a league fixture on Saturday (Feb 24).

Meanwhile, Neyland will look to get back to winning ways as they host Lamphey.

Sporting achievements celebrated at the Sport Pembrokeshire Awards 2023

Published

on

The remarkable achievements of Pembrokeshire’s sporting community were celebrated at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday evening, November 24th.

The Sport Pembrokeshire Awards 2023 were held at Folly Farm and paid tribute to efforts both on and off the pitch by sports people, coaches and volunteers alike.

Record nominations had been received as the awards continue to go from strength to strength.

The judges had an extremely difficult task to whittle the numbers firstly down to finalists and then deserving winners.

The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was race walking star Heather Warner who has represented both Wales and Team GB at the highest levels.

A Pembrokeshire Harrier, Heather soon discovered a natural talent for race walking and it was no surprise that a collection of local and national titles followed.

Welsh and Team GB vests at both junior and senior level were the natural progression in her career.

Heather collected a fantastic seventh place in the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on Australia’s Gold Coast and a British record followed in Birmingham four years later to go with a brilliant sixth place.

While competing around the world Heather has always continued to coach at Pembrokeshire Harriers and passing on the breadth of her knowledge and experience and is a worthy winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023.

“Heather’s outstanding success, coupled with an obvious desire to one day guide others, can only help raise the profile of the sport in a positive way,” said Geoff Williams from BBC Wales, who presented Heather with her award.

The winner of the Chairman’s Special Achievement Award, presented by Cllr Thomas Tudor, was Makala Jones.

Makala has taught cold water confidence and a proper swimming technique to countless people of all ages in Pembrokeshire, enabling them to enjoy the coastline all year round. She also successfully swum the English channel solo in July this year.

She has been described as a legend, an inspiration, a real-life super hero, great fun to be around, a role model proving you can achieve your dreams and an incredibly strong and helpful human being.

In presenting her award, Cllr Tudor said what makes her so special is her passion for sharing the benefits of outdoor swimming for improved mental health.

This year the School Award was won by Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi.

The judges were impressed by the wide range of sports and activities provided by and hosted by Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi and how the school is a focal point for sports health and wellbeing in the St Davids community and surrounding areas.

Under Headteacher Rachel Thomas and Head of Wellbing Bruce Evans, young people are given the opportunity to try a wide variety of sports and activities to embed a love of staying active and protecting the natural environment from an early age.

It was also a significant evening with the announcement that host Bill Carne would be retiring after 17 years presenting the awards.

Matthew Freeman, manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, paid tribute to his dedication and professionalism over the years.

“Bill Carne has become synonymous with the Sport Pembrokeshire Awards and is rightly regarded as the voice of sport in Pembrokeshire,” he said.

“Sport Pembrokeshire are truly honoured to have had his support at the awards for all these years along with his wider support in advocating and raising the profile of the work that Sport Pembrokeshire team do across the county.

“Bill can now retreat from the stage and enjoy the evening from the audience’s vantage point and enjoy the spectacle that is the Sport Pembrokeshire awards.”

It’s all eyes on the Obs’ once again – West Wales Cup preview

Published

on

THE TWO top teams in the county clash once again however this time in the West Wales Cup. Hakin are the hosts and arguably the underdogs as they hope to end Goodwick United’s remarkable unbeaten run.

It was 3-3 in the league fixture, however a draw won’t be the outcome Saturday one way or another we will have a winner. Both teams will have aspirations of reaching the final of this competition and perhaps it’s a bit early in the competition for these two to meet in an ideal world. A mouthwatering prospect however and one I’m sure will draw a huge crowd come 13:30 this Saturday.

The other all Pembrokeshire ties are Carew vs Pennar Robins and Milford United vs Tenby. Both ties could easily go either way and all four clubs will be hoping for a run to the latter stages of this competitive cup competition. Nothing could separate Tenby and Milford in their league tie and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top here.

Kilgetty, Johnston and Merlins Bridge are all on the road. Dafen Welfare are Kilgetty’s opponents and play in the West Wales Premier league, they will provide a good test. Johnston’s opponents Penlan are in the same league and have a similar record thus far this season, a tricky fixture for both clubs. Bridge however travel to Llangennech as favourites, the hosts are struggling in the Carmarthenshire Premier Division this season.

Fishguard Sports are at home to AFC Glais who breezed past Monkton in the previous round 5-1. While Clarbeston Road host Evans and Williams who are unbeaten and top of the West Wales Premier League. However Matthew Fox’ team are a dangerous one as they’ve shown this season, the question will be can the visitors do it on ‘a cold winters afternoon in Clarby’

Good luck to all Pembrokeshire teams once again this weekend.

This week’s Pembrokeshire rugby round up – 25/11/23

Published

on

THERE was plenty of rugby to choose from up and down the county last weekend. We round up the latest results, as Pembrokeshire based teams experienced mixed fortunes. At the very top the Otters are unstoppable as they win again at home to Ystalyfera 57 points to 5. Gibby, Powell and Griffiths all impressed and the Narberth bench was full of quality and experience at this level demonstrating the strength in depth at the club. Key players like Slater and Rogers on the bench is a great sign for the Otters’ squad’s depth and options.

Meanwhile in division two Tenby continued their good form as they beat Amman United 79-12. Dan Colley was the star of the show getting across the line an unbelievable fives times. Former Pembroke contingent Toby Smith, Tom Lewis, Luke Hartland and Geiraint Powell all also crossed the whitewash for the Seasiders. Twelve tries in total for the hosts and they look in formidable form.

Also in the second division, Fishguard are looking strong as they had a much closer game but still came out on top beating Carmarthen Athletic 20-17. Having lost only two league games this season Fishguard will hope the keep up the pressure on the teams at the top of the league in the coming weeks.

In the third division there wasn’t much success at all for Pembrokeshire based teams. Pembroke Dock Quins and Llangwm losing to Aberaeron and Cardigan respectively. While Laugharne comfortably beat Neyland.

St Davids however were the exception to the rule as they had a day to remember scoring over 50 points against Llanybydder. It’s not very often the Saints hit those kind of numbers and is a huge positive for the club. Owain Swain crossed twice for the saints as well as Joyce and Raymond. Outside half Foster added points with the boot and all in all a great day at the office for the Saints.
