Pembrokeshire voted top UK destination by Welsh public
OVER a quarter of the Welsh population plan to visit Pembrokeshire this year, making it the most popular UK tourist destination for Welsh people.
Roughly 27% of the population revealed their plans to visit the county, in a consumer survey by business insurer NFU Mutual, which also found that three-quarters of people from Wales are choosing to indulge in UK tourist destinations this year, slightly higher than the UK average of 73%.
Pembrokeshire was followed by Llandudno/Snowdonia, London, Bath, Devon and Liverpool as the top destinations for the Welsh public. The top reasons for choosing a UK destination include the ease of planning at short notice (43%), followed by simply loving what the UK has to offer (including countryside, towns, beaches and history), 31%, and the travel being less hassle (28%).
Darren Seward, hospitality sector specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “It’s wonderful to see that so many people from Wales are planning to travel across land and sea to explore all that their kingdom has to offer this year.
“Proving there’s no place like home, Pembrokeshire came top for Welsh people as spontaneous, hassle-free getaways to much-loved destinations are particularly appealing this year. The weak pound should make the UK a more attractive holiday option and deliver a boost for the Welsh leisure industry after the late arrival of Spring.”
Just under a fifth of people from Wales are likely to choose a UK staycation because of feeling safer here, slightly lower than the UK average (18% vs. 21%).
The top reasons people feel less safe abroad include the threat of terrorism (64%) and being an easy target to thieves (45%), followed by civil unrest, poorer healthcare, the inability to understand or communicate in a different language (all 37%) and unfamiliarity in different road layouts or being unable to detect bad neighbourhoods (35%).
Wales should expect visits from over a tenth (12%) of UK-wide tourists this year. The most holidaymakers will be coming in from around the Liverpool area, followed by Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield, for reasons including beautiful scenery, wildlife and mountains, the coastline, and visiting family and friends.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
