Welsh first for St Francis School
ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL in Milford Haven has become the first school in Wales to win the gold award of the Cymraeg Campus Language Charter for developing Welsh.
The Cymraeg Campus Language Charter has been created by ERW Welsh in Education officers and is the first charter specifically created to develop Welsh in English medium schools.
The school began working towards the language charter in January 2016 and swiftly won the bronze and silver awards, having worked enthusiastically to complete the targets within the charter.
Year 6 Cyngor Cymraeg member Lexi said: “We are all very proud of winning the gold award. We now love speaking Welsh together and are proud of how we’ve developed Welsh at our school since winning the bronze award.”
Welsh advisory teacher and co-author of the charter, Catrin Phillips, said: “I would like to congratulate the whole team at St.Francis for fostering a love of the Welsh language amongst the pupils and the wider school community.
“Welsh has become a natural part of daily life at Ysgol Sant Ffransis. The staff, assisted enthusiastically by pupils of the Cyngor Cymraeg have succeeded in creating an ethos where pupils are confident and proud to use their Welsh skills.”
Deputy headteacher, Sarah Mansfield, said: “The award is recognition of years of hard work. The staff have worked tirelessly to ensure the best provision possible. The pupils’ love of the language, and enthusiasm for all things Welsh, is contagious.”
The whole school community at St.Francis has embraced the development of Welsh in daily life and across all areas of learning. Pupils’ of the Cyngor Cymraeg are passionate about creating plentiful opportunities for their peers to use Welsh in fun and engaging activities.
The school promotes the benefits of learning Welsh and is succeeding in creating proud, bilingual learners.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
