Lifeboat crews rescue jet ski users in difficulty off Pendine

JET SKI users were thrown from their craft this weekend, which had then blown half a mile away from them, leaving them with no way of getting ashore, until the RNLI assisted.

Shortly after midday on Saturday (Jul 9) the Coastguard received reports that a jet ski appeared to have broken down some way off Pendine beach and was drifting out to sea.

Both Tenby lifeboats made their way to Pendine and when they arrived on the scene a passing yacht was preparing to assist the casualties after noticing the drifting jet ski.

It turned out the occupants had been thrown from the jet ski, which had then blown half a mile away from them due to the offshore wind, leaving them with no way to get ashore and no means of summoning help.

The Y-boat recovered both casualties, who were then taken aboard the lifeboat, where they were checked over to ensure they didn’t need any medical assistance.

The jet ski was then taken in tow towards Pendine. Its occupants made their way ashore, none the worse for their ordeal.

Lifeboat crews were stood down and returned to station, at 1.20pm.

An RNLI spokesperson told The Herald that this incident could have been very serious.

“We would like to remind people to have suitable means for calling for help, by way of a VHF radio, marine flares or even a mobile phone in a waterproof carry case,” said the spokesperson.

“We are grateful for the ever-watchful eyes of the lifeguards who spotted the jet ski drifting and reported it to the Coastguard.

“Without them, this incident could have been a lot more serious.”

Motorist almost three times over drink limit

A MOTORIST who was nearly three times over the drink-drive limit has been sentenced following a crash on the B4314 in Pendine.

Stuart Rickford, 43, was driving his Audi at 1:30pm on November 15 when he collided with another vehicle.

“There were no injuries, but when officers spoke to the defendant they had a strong smell of intoxicants,” Crown Prosecutor Linda Baker told the court.

A roadside breath test proved positive, and Rickford, of Beach Hotel, Marsh Road, Pendine, later gave a reading of 93 mcg of alcohol at the police station. The legal limit is 35.

Rickford pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a 12-month Community Order with 80 hours of unpaid work. He was disqualified from driving for 23 months and ordered to pay a £114 court surcharge and £85 costs.

Man jailed for threats at Withybush Hospital

A HAVERFORDWEST man has been sentenced to seven days in custody after threatening to harm members of the public at Withybush Hospital.

Wayne Tydeman, 42, made threats while speaking to a community practice nurse following his release from a 24-week custodial sentence.

“He was on post-sentence supervision, and this is the first breach,” probation officer Julie Norman told the court.

Tydeman, of Dew Street, Haverfordwest, was remanded in custody and appeared via video link from Park Prison. His solicitor said his mental health had improved during his time in custody.

Judge Layton sentenced him to seven days in custody, warning: “If you fail to engage in the future, the sentence will be considerably longer.”
