FIREFIGHTERS from several stations are involved in tackling a fire which has spread across several fields of corn on the St Davids peninsula

Emergency services were called at 13:30 HRS to the large blaze near Whitesands, St Davids, Pembrokeshire.

Crews from St Davids, Haverfordwest, Fishguard and Milford Haven are at the scene, with other crews expected from other nearby fire stations.

Black smoke can be seen from many nearby beaches, including New Gale, where several readers have sent in photos from.

The police and county council are assisting with traffic control, and the road between Nun Street (A487) and Hendre Eynon Caravan Site has been closed in both directions while firefighters tackle the fire.

Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Numerous roads in St Davids are closed due to a fire, please avoid the area.”

It is understood that the blaze has already jumped a road, usually busy this time of year.

Some farm machinery has been sadly destroyed, as well as likely many thousands of pounds of crops.

Posting on Twitter, the St Davids Cathedral said: “A large grassfire has broken out on the old pilgrim’s trail into the valley on the north side – prayers for the fire crews in attendance and anyone who lives close by. A brisk very warm northerly wind isn’t helping.”

A local BBC news reporter, Peter Gillibrand, who was in the area taking a weekend break, said of the fire on Twitter: “It was a very hard thing to watch. Talking to the landowners, they are gutted.

“They didn’t have much time to speak, which is understandable.

“People, including myself, asked whether we could help in any way… and local bar owners giving out drinks to the brave firefighters.”
