Pembrokeshire set for Long Course Weekend road closures

PEMBROKESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL has announced a series of temporary road closures and restrictions to accommodate the eagerly anticipated annual Long Course Weekend. This multifaceted sporting event, a highlight on the South Pembrokeshire calendar, will span from Friday, 21st June, to Sunday, 23rd June 2024, encompassing a swim, cycle sportive, and the Wales Marathon.

The council’s traffic management officer, Kelly Morris, detailed the operational logistics, emphasizing the necessity of these measures to ensure public safety and the smooth execution of the events. Notably, the schedule includes the temporary closure of The Croft and a section of the Norton (White Lion Street to The Croft) on Friday evening between 16:30hrs and 18:30hrs. This decision comes in light of the anticipated spectator turnout for the swim event, with arrangements in place to manage access to properties on The Croft.

Building on the success of previous years, the event’s start and finish points on Saturday and Sunday (22nd and 23rd June) will once again be stationed at the Salterns car park. Moreover, comprehensive road closures will be enacted on a rolling basis for the Marathon on Sunday, 23rd.

Attached to Morris’s announcement was a detailed schedule outlining the roads subject to closures and one-way restrictions over the weekend. The council has committed to implementing these closures in a phased manner, ensuring minimal disruption and the timely reopening of roads post-event.

The council seeks feedback from the community and has requested that any comments be submitted by Friday, 19th April 2024. This consultative approach reflects the council’s dedication to transparency and community engagement in the planning and execution of significant public events.

The Long Course Weekend continues to be a marquee event for South Pembrokeshire, drawing athletes and spectators from across the UK and beyond. Through careful planning and coordination, Pembrokeshire County Council is committed to ensuring that this year’s event is a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station celebrates refurbishment and RNLI bicentennial

The Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station recently marked two significant milestones with a grand reopening after extensive refurbishment and a special visit as part of the RNLI’s 200th anniversary celebrations.

On Saturday, 7th September, RNLI volunteers, supporters, and crew members gathered to celebrate the lifeboat station’s official reopening following major refurbishment work carried out over the winter months. The updated facilities, designed to bring the station into the 21st century, were unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the children of the operational crew and supporters. This heartwarming gesture symbolised the passing of responsibility to the next generation of lifesavers.

Lifeboat Operations Manager, Andy Grey, expressed his pride in the station’s transformation and the success of the event: “The station opening was extremely successful. Not only did the weather hold out, but personnel from the station, including officers and crew, branch members, and shop volunteers, were in attendance, along with guests from our neighbouring RNLI stations. The occasion truly represented the ‘One Crew’ philosophy. To make it even more special, the children of the crew were invited to formally open the new refurbishment of the station. A lovely gesture but also a great memory.”

The upgraded station now provides state-of-the-art facilities, including a modernised lifeboat shop, which will improve working conditions for the dedicated volunteers. Roger Bryan Smith DL, Area Operations Manager, also highlighted the importance of the refurbishment: “I am absolutely delighted that Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station has been refurbished to such a high standard. The crew devote an immense amount of their spare time to training to save lives at sea, and it’s marvellous that they now have such great facilities.”

Among the attendees were Gemma Gill, Coxswain of Fishguard Lifeboat, and Will Chant, Coxswain of St Davids Lifeboat Station, who showed their support and helped with presentations. The day was filled with a sense of community and celebration of the station’s lifesaving mission.

Later that month, on Wednesday, 25th September, Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station received a special visit as part of the RNLI’s bicentennial year. The RNLI 200 ‘Connecting our Communities’ scroll, which bears the lifeboat pledge, arrived at the station as part of its seven-month journey around 240 RNLI locations across the UK and Ireland. The pledge, printed in Welsh, English, and five other languages, celebrates the dedication of RNLI volunteers and their mission to save lives at sea.

Andy Grey, along with other key members of the station, including Shireen Thomas from the shop, Peter Erte from the fundraising branch, and Water Safety Officer Sue Christopher, had the honour of signing the scroll on behalf of the Little and Broad Haven lifeboat community. The scroll, made from materials significant to the charity, will conclude its journey in October on the Isle of Man, where RNLI founder Sir William Hillary was born. Once the journey is complete, the scroll will bear around 700 signatures and be displayed at the RNLI College in Poole.

Anjie Rook, RNLI Associate Director, overseeing the 200th anniversary programmes, said: “The Connecting our Communities relay is one of the most significant events of the RNLI’s 200th anniversary year as it’s all about our people. For 200 years, it is people who have made the RNLI what it is – from our brave lifesavers who risk their lives to save others, to the committed fundraisers and generous donors who fund our lifesaving work.”

By coincidence, the RNLI Porsche 911 Challenge also arrived at the station on the same day. Belinda and James Richardson, who are travelling 8,500 miles in their Porsche 911 to visit all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations within 911 hours, were delighted to encounter the scroll for the first time on their journey. The couple is raising funds for a new D class inshore lifeboat, which is critical to the RNLI’s lifesaving work. In 2023 alone, D class lifeboats saved 96 lives and assisted over 2,000 people in distress.

Andy Grey reflected on the unique timing of the two events: “Today we had a special visit from the RNLI 911 Challenge and the RNLI Scroll. To happen at the same time and on the same day was unique in itself. The beautiful Porsche of the 911 Challenge presented a jigsaw and a special RNLI-themed version of Top Trumps in memory of their visit to all lifeboat stations in the UK. Four members from the station were asked to sign this wonderful scroll, which will be a memory and recognition of the 200-year celebration of the RNLI.”

Jayne George, RNLI Director of Fundraising, expressed her gratitude for the Richardsons’ efforts: “We are so grateful to Belinda and James for taking on this huge challenge and look forward to welcoming them at all our lifeboat stations around the coast. We are only able to save lives at sea thanks to the generous support of people taking on challenges like this.”

As the RNLI celebrates 200 years of saving lives at sea, Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station continues to play a vital role in this enduring mission, with new facilities and a strong community spirit driving them forward into the future.

Woman charged over death of four paddleboarders in Haverfordwest

NERYS Bethan Lloyd, aged 39, from Aberavon, has been charged with four counts of gross negligence manslaughter and one offence under the Health and Safety at Work Act following the incident on the River Cleddau in Pembrokeshire on Saturday, October 30, 2021. The incident resulted in the deaths of Paul O’Dwyer, Andrea Powell, Morgan Rogers and Nicola Wheatley and there were 4 other survivors.

Lloyd will appear at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on December, 3.

Detective Superintendent Cameron Ritchie, senior investigating officer, said, “Following a lengthy and complex investigation, working closely with the Health and Safety Executive and the Crown Prosecution Service, Nerys Lloyd has today been charged with 4 counts of gross negligence manslaughter and 1 count under the Health and Safety At Work Act. The families of those who died and those who survived the incident have all been informed. As criminal proceedings are now underway it is important that there is no reporting, commentary or online posting that could prejudice this case.”

Safety concerns raised over proposed new Milford Haven Lidl store

THE new Lidl supermarket planned for Milford Haven has sparked safety concerns from a neighbouring business owner, as the application for its construction is set to go before Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee next week.

The new store is proposed to be built where the current car park is, with the building coming right next to the road.

Ian Ritchie, owner of the Victoria Filling Station, which sits adjacent to the proposed site on Great North Road, has been raising alarms about the potential dangers posed by the store’s design and access arrangements.

Despite repeated attempts to engage with Lidl’s representatives and the council, Ritchie claims his concerns have been largely ignored, with planners seemingly prioritising retail space over road and pedestrian safety.

“The safety of customers and pedestrians has become secondary for more retail space and 11 more parking spaces,” Ritchie stated. He warns that the current plans for the store, which include demolishing the existing Lidl and adjoining properties, will block his site and create hazardous conditions for both his customers and passing traffic.

The Victoria Filling Station, a business with nearly 100 years of service to the community, sees high traffic volumes, including regular deliveries from large fuel trucks. Ritchie points out that the filling station’s boundary area includes a vapour recovery system and fuel tanks holding over 50,000 litres. He argues that the proposed layout of the new Lidl could impede the safe flow of traffic in and out of his site, potentially resulting in accidents and putting customers at risk.

Ritchie has been advocating for a redesign that would ensure safe access for both his customers and those visiting the new Lidl store. However, he says his attempts to open a dialogue have been fruitless. “Listening to the conversation today, I do not believe our site has been considered in any way,” Ritchie remarked in a recent communication, emphasising the lack of engagement from planners on what he views as serious public safety and environmental concerns.

Lidl’s proposed new store is set to replace its current premises on Great North Road, along with adjoining properties, including the Enterprise Rent-a-Car unit. According to a statement by planning agents CarneySweeney, the new store aims to address the outdated design and operational inefficiencies of the current supermarket while better serving local customer demand. The development promises up to 40 new jobs and will expand the car park to 93 spaces, adding EV charging points and spaces for parents and children.

Despite the potential benefits, Ritchie believes these improvements come at the expense of safety. His concerns include the impact on visibility for vehicles, the increased risk for fuel trucks accessing the filling station, and the overall traffic flow on this busy trunk road. The filling station, which pumps around 4 million litres of fuel annually, plays a crucial role in the community by providing competitively priced fuel.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning officer has recommended the application for conditional approval at its 8 October meeting. While the project has gained support from Milford Haven Town Council, two public objections have been lodged, citing concerns over the store’s design, size, and vehicle access arrangements. Following feedback, the applicants have made some changes, such as removing proposed bollards that would have obstructed access to a disabled parking bay. However, Ritchie’s larger concerns about road safety and access remain unresolved.

The officer’s report notes that the site includes several properties that have been unoccupied for some time, as well as a former petrol station with underground storage tanks that are set to be removed. While Lidl’s statement emphasises their commitment to reducing environmental impact during construction, Ritchie worries that his filling station’s safety and operational viability are at stake.

As the planning committee prepares to make its decision, Ritchie continues to call for a balanced approach that prioritises safety for existing businesses and the community. The outcome of this meeting will determine whether his concerns will be addressed or if the development will proceed as planned, potentially setting a precedent for how new retail developments are handled in proximity to established businesses.
