Lawrenny (136) lost to Haverfordwest (140-2) by 8 wkts
HAVERFORDWEST cruised to an eight-wicket win on Saturday (Aug 27) to secure the points they needed to retain their Division One title.
Going into the game, Haverfordwest were just two points ahead of challengers Neyland and knew they would need a strong win if they were to retain their title.
Lawrenny batted first but were all out for just 136, with Adam James taking another five wickets.
James was involved early on as he had Steve Campbell and Harry Thomas for a second ball duck , both caught by Huw Scriven.
Steve and Jamie Lewis then shared 28 for the third wicket before Jamie was caught by Simon Holliday off the bowling of James.
Brad Mcdermot-Jenkins and Steve Lewis then shared 18 runs for the fourth wicket but Mcdermot-Jenkins was then caught by Ben Field off the bowling of Gareth Davies , having hit two fours and a six in a score of 14.
Steve Lewis had hit seven fours and a six in a knock of 42 from 35 balls but he was then caught by David Davies off the bowling of James to leave Lawrenny on 61-5.
Ian Jenkins was then bowled by Simon Holliday as Lawrenny struggled to find runs.
Simon Cole and James Buckle set about putting Lawrenny in a better position as they shared 47 runs for the seventh wicket.
That partnership was brought to an end when Cole was caught by Adeel Khan off the bowling of Gareth Davies for a score of 29 , which included four fours and a six.
Davies then removed Philip Cole and Rob Williams before James returned to take the final wicket of Buckle.
Buckle had hit three fours and a six in a score of 28 but his wicket meant Lawrenny were all out for 136 and that Town had picked up maximum bowling points.
In reply, Simon Holliday and Nikhil Mathias shared 63 for the opening partnership to put Town in a strong position as they edged closer to the title.
Mathias was bowled by Rob Williams for a score of 37 , which included five fours , and David Davies made three as he played a supporting role to Holliday before he was bowled by Mcdermot-Jenkins.
Ben Field hit four fours and a six as he finished not out 24 from 22 balls while Holliday was the star of the innings as he hit nine fours and a six to finish not out on 69.
The win gave Haverfordwest 28 points but they faced a nervous wait to find out if Neyland would overtake them.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
