Amroth beach the most ‘dog-friendly’
AMROTH BEACH has been crowned the most dog-friendly in the county at the recent Pembrokeshire Tourism Awards in conjunction with Burns Pet Nutrition.
The awards are designed to champion responsible pet ownership and recognise the efforts of outstanding local businesses throughout the county who help to make Pembrokeshire a dog-friendly destination.
Freshwater East and Broad Haven South were the other beaches nominated.
Although dog restrictions are in place along the central and western end of the half mile long stretch of sand between May 1 and September 30, the top and bottom end of the Blue Flag status beach is open all year-round for dogs to run around and explore.
It is a popular destination for pooches and their owners throughout the year especially at low tide where it’s possible to walk to Wiseman’s Bridge along the shore.
“This award is well deserved,” said Cabinet Member for the Environment and Welsh Language, Councillor Cris Tomos.
“There is good provision for owners to dispose of litter as well as water bowls for dogs to drink from after exerting themselves on the sand.”
“I’m delighted it has been crowned as the most dog friendly beach in these awards.”

Harassment charge and three assaults among cases listed for Llanelli court
A PEMBROKE DOCK man has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing after admitting a series of offences, including harassment and assaults.
Tony Brundrett, aged 21, of Kavanagh Court, Pembroke Dock, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Dec 15).
The court heard Brundrett has pleaded guilty to harassment without violence, contrary to the Protection from Harassment Act. The charge alleges that between Tuesday (Sep 17) and Thursday (Oct 31) at Spring View, Pembroke Dock, he pursued a course of conduct amounting to harassment of a female, including attending her home address and contacting her by text message.
He has also admitted assault by beating against the same female, alleged to have taken place on Wednesday (May 21) at Spring View, Pembroke Dock, and a further assault by beating against a second female on Thursday (Oct 30), also at Spring View.
Magistrates were additionally told that Brundrett faces a further allegation of common assault against a third female, said to have occurred on Tuesday (Dec 9) at Kavanagh Court, Pembroke Dock. No plea was recorded to that matter in the register entry.

Zombie knife charge and dangerous driving among offences before the court
A MILFORD HAVEN man has appeared before magistrates charged with four offences arising from a single incident in Pembrokeshire.
Simon Rees, aged 28, of Observatory Avenue, Hakin, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Dec 15).
The court heard that all four offences are alleged to have taken place on Tuesday (Nov 5) and relate to an incident on the A477 towards Pembroke Dock involving a Ford Fiesta.
Rees is charged with:
- Possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, namely a zombie knife
- Dangerous driving
- Using a motor vehicle without third party insurance
- Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence
Magistrates were told that Rees has pleaded guilty to the insurance offence and to driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence. He has also changed his plea to guilty on the offensive weapon charge, while indicating a guilty plea to the dangerous driving offence.
The case was adjourned for sentence, and the court ordered that a pre-sentence report be prepared.
Rees was remanded on conditional bail, with conditions including a night-time curfew between 8:00pm and 7:00am, to be electronically monitored, and a requirement to reside at his home address.
He is due to return to Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Tuesday (Jan 7) at 10:00am.

Pembrokeshire businesses warn rates revaluation could force closures
LOCAL businesses from across Pembrokeshire have warned that sharp increases in business rates could lead to redundancies and closures, following a public meeting held in Saundersfoot on Monday (Dec 15).
The meeting, held at the Hean Castle venue, brought together traders from retail, hospitality, professional services and the visitor economy to raise concerns about the impact of the latest business rates revaluation, which will take effect from April 2026.
Among those attending were Samuel Kurtz MS, Conservative Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, and Pembrokeshire County Councillor Jonathan Grimes, who represents Pembroke St Mary South and Monkton.
Businesses described sudden and significant increases in rateable values, with some reporting rises of more than 100%, despite no expansion in premises or improvement in trading conditions.
Evidence presented to the meeting highlighted concerns first identified by Pembrokeshire County Councillor Huw Murphy, who has been raising the issue locally and working with businesses, The Herald and S4C to bring the scale of the increases to public attention.
Cllr Murphy was unable to attend the Saundersfoot meeting, but details were provided on his behalf by Lee Bridges, drawing on information from businesses in the Newport & District Chamber of Trade area and Dinas Cross.
Figures relating to twenty local businesses showed that eighteen are facing increases in their rateable values, with one business hit by a 140% rise from April 2026. The average increase across the group was 36%, pushing the combined rateable value from £499,000 to £679,000 — an additional £180,000 burden due to take effect within four months.
One affected business has already warned that staff redundancies will be “unavoidable” if the increases go ahead.
Attendees criticised the Welsh Government’s transitional relief arrangements, describing them as inadequate and warning that they fall short of the support currently available to parts of the tourism and hospitality sector.
Tourism and hospitality account for an estimated 23% of Pembrokeshire’s economy, and those present warned that unchecked increases could have a serious impact on employment in coastal communities dependent on visitor trade.
The 2026 revaluation is based on rental values from April 2024 and has sparked concern across the county, with reports elsewhere in Pembrokeshire of increases of up to 400%.
Following the meeting, Mr Kurtz confirmed that he has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language, Mark Drakeford MS, warning that current relief measures are insufficient and risk “pushing otherwise viable businesses over a cliff edge”.
He said businesses are already making decisions to close as a direct result of the projected increases and called for urgent action to protect jobs and local economies.
Businesses are being urged to check their new rateable values on the Valuation Office Agency website and to seek advice or contact their local representatives if they believe the figures are inaccurate or unsustainable.
