Lawrenny seal emotional Alec Colley win
LAWRENNY were crowned Alec Colley Cup winners last Sunday (Aug 13), as they beat Whitland in the final at Pembroke.
Afterwards, captain Huw Griffiths dedicated the win to Lance Osborn, who was on the books with Lawrenny and who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The win for Lawrenny was also their first Alec Colley success and they were backed by a good number of supporters.
It was an excellent final played in great spirits and the music added to the great atmosphere inside the ground.
Whitland batted first and made 125-8 from their first 20 overs.
Opener Paul Oeppen departed early when he was bowled by Harry Thomas for a score of seven while Ed John was caught by Chris Buckle off the bowling of Thomas for a score of three.
Fellow opener Gregg Sleep batted well as he made a score of 29 but he was then bowled by Steve Lewis.
Jack Bowen also looked in good form as he made his way to a score of 25 but he was then stumped by Huw Griffiths off the bowling of Steve Cole.
Adam Davies made the same score as Bowen before being caught by Griffiths off the bowling of Steve Lewis.
Geraint Phillips scored 13 but Lawrenny’s bowlers took control in the closing stages of the first innings as Lewis bowled Phillips and Gethin Scourfield.
That meant that Whitland finished on a total of 125 and Lawrenny would have been confident of getting a lead going into the second innings.
Lawrenny began their reply in fine style as Harry Thomas and Steve Lewis shared a good opening stand.
Thomas made a score of 26 but was then caught by Jack Bowen off the bowling of Geraint Phillips.
Lewis and Arthur then shared another excellent partnership as they both reached their half centuries.
Lewis top scored in the innings with 58 but he was then caught by Phillips off the bowling of Gethin Scourfield.
Arthur had also batted well to reach a score of 57 but was stumped by Adam Davies off the bowling of Gregg Sleep.
Sleep and Scourfield then began to hold up the Lawrenny reply as Scourfield had James Phillips caught by Bowen.
Sleep had Steve Campbell caught by James Thomas for a duck and Tom Cole was caught by Paul Oeppen for a score of one.
Phillips also trapped Matt Lewis leg before wicket for another duck but thanks to the hitting of Lewis and Arthur, Lawrenny reached an excellent total of 173-7, giving them a lead of 48.
Whitland knew they would need to do well to stand a chance of victory but they lost opener Sleep early on in their second innings when he was bowled for a duck by Thomas.
Paul Oeppen only scored 8 before he was caught by Steve Lewis off the bowling of Alistair Edwards and he also bowled Jack Bowen for a score of six.
Ed John and Adam Davies looked to get Whitland back on track with some good shots but Davies was caught by James Phillips off the bowling of Lewis for a score of 14.
John and Geraint Phillips then shared another good partnership as they scored over 60 runs between them.
John was eventually caught by Lewis off the bowling of Thomas for a score of 31 while Phillips was bowled by Steve Cole for a score of 32.
Lewis also had James Thomas stumped by Griffiths for a score of 9 and Gethin Scourfield caught by Matthew Lewis for a score of five.
Whitland were thankful to Steff Lee who finished not out on 16 to guide Whitland to a second innings total of 138-9.
However, it meant that Lawrenny would need just 92 to secure the Alec Colley Cup.
They lost opener Steve Lewis for a duck when he was caught by Oeppen off the bowling of Lee for a duck.
Julian Arthur couldn’t repeat his first innings score but made 13 before he was stumped by Adam Davies off the bowling of Scourfield.
Geraint Phillips was convinced he had an LBW but his appeals were turned down by umpire Allan Hansen.
Harry Thomas played well again and along with James Phillips they took their side to within touching distance of victory.
Thomas made 25 before he was trapped leg before wicket by Sleep to make the score 67-3.
Steve Campbell was looking for runs and that cost him as he was run out for a score of three and Lawrenny were now 77-4 at the start of the fourteenth over.
Lawrenny were helped along at the start of the next over as Jack Bowen bowled four wides but it was James Phillips who eventually won the game for Lawrenny with a big six to take them to their target.
The man of the match award was given to Harry Thomas for his excellent batting and bowling display.
Speaking after the match, Lawrenny captain Huw Griffiths paid tribute to Whitland for the part they played in the final and said they would have a big future ahead of them.
He also thanked everyone who had come to support the team and to his fellow players for their efforts.
“On the shirts, it says in memory of Mr Lance Osborn, who was a second team player, and sadly passed away, but I know he is up there looking down on us. So, this win is for you, mate,” he said.

Second-half goals from Lewis Rees and Will Hughes earned Haverfordwest County a 2-1 win at the Bridge Meadow
HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY continued their preparations for the new JD Cymru Premier campaign with a 2-1 victory over Caerau Ely at the Bridge Meadow Stadium on Tuesday evening.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes, the Bluebirds took control of the contest with two goals in the space of seven second-half minutes.
Lewis Rees made the breakthrough in the 55th minute, putting the home side ahead following a closely contested first half.
Will Hughes then doubled Haverfordwest’s advantage in the 62nd minute, giving the Bluebirds what appeared to be a comfortable lead as the game entered its final half-hour.
Caerau Ely responded almost immediately, reducing the deficit just three minutes later to ensure Haverfordwest were made to work for the victory.
The Bluebirds successfully protected their narrow advantage during the closing stages to record a useful 2-1 win in their penultimate pre-season outing.
The fixture provided another opportunity for the Haverfordwest coaching staff to assess the squad, build match fitness and continue preparations ahead of the beginning of the competitive campaign.
Haverfordwest will now turn their attention to their final friendly of the summer when they welcome Llanelli Town to the Bridge Meadow Stadium on Saturday, July 25.

Saka hat-trick fires England to bronze in ten-goal World Cup thriller
Three Lions survive remarkable French fightback to claim third place with a 6-4 victory in Miami
ENGLAND ended their World Cup campaign with a bronze medal after defeating France 6-4 in an extraordinary third-place play-off in Miami on Saturday night.
Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick as Thomas Tuchel’s side raced into a stunning four-goal lead before surviving a fierce second-half comeback led by Kylian Mbappé.
Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Jude Bellingham were also on target for England, who secured their best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966 and claimed third place in the competition for the first time.
Any fears that the disappointment of Wednesday’s semi-final defeat by Argentina would produce a subdued performance disappeared within three minutes.
Rice, wearing the captain’s armband as one of seven changes to England’s starting line-up, intercepted a poor pass from Désiré Doué before driving an emphatic finish beyond France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Saka briefly thought he had doubled the advantage after being released by Morgan Rogers, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
England did not have to wait much longer.
Rice delivered a corner into the French penalty area in the 19th minute and Konsa climbed above Adrien Rabiot to power a header past Maignan.
France struggled to cope with England’s pace on the break, although Dean Henderson was called upon to deny Mbappé after the forward cut inside from the left.
That save helped launch the move which produced England’s third goal in the 37th minute. Marcus Rashford and Saka both had efforts blocked before the Arsenal winger eventually forced the ball home.
Saka struck again in first-half stoppage time, collecting a pass from Eberechi Eze and finishing clinically to send England into the break with a remarkable 4-0 lead.
France manager Didier Deschamps responded with four substitutions at half-time and the changes immediately transformed the contest.
Mbappé pulled one back in the 48th minute after Michael Olise’s pass opened the England defence, before substitute Bradley Barcola reduced the deficit further six minutes later.
England, so composed during the opening period, suddenly looked vulnerable.
Mbappé exchanged passes with Olise before scoring his second in the 67th minute, making it 4-3 and leaving Tuchel’s side facing the possibility of surrendering a four-goal advantage.
France pressed for an equaliser, with Olise passing up a major opportunity as England desperately attempted to regain control.
The decisive moment arrived four minutes from time when England were awarded a penalty. Saka took responsibility and converted to complete his hat-trick, restoring a two-goal cushion.
Even then, the drama was not finished.
Ousmane Dembélé scored France’s fourth goal in the sixth minute of added time, but Bellingham responded almost immediately, surging through the French defence and finishing past Maignan to seal an unforgettable 6-4 victory.
The result brought an emotional conclusion to England’s campaign following their painful 2-1 semi-final defeat against Argentina.
Although the Three Lions again fell short of reaching a World Cup final, their bronze medal represents the country’s strongest showing in the competition for 60 years.
For Saka, who had remained on the bench throughout the semi-final, it was a particularly memorable response. His treble placed him alongside an elite group of England players to have scored a hat-trick at a World Cup.
France’s defeat marked the end of Deschamps’ 14-year reign as national team manager, while England will return home knowing that a chaotic and thrilling final performance at least provided a positive ending to their tournament.
France: Mbappé 48, 67; Barcola 54; Dembélé 90+6
England: Rice 3; Konsa 19; Saka 37, 45+1, 86 pen; Bellingham 90+8
Half-time: France 0-4 England
Venue: Miami Stadium
Attendance: To be confirmed
