Smith stars as Pembroke beat Quins
PEMBROKE won the bragging rights as they beat neighbours Pembroke Dock Quins 41-14 at Bierspool today (Sept 9), thanks to a hat trick of tries from Sam Smith.
The visitors were on top in the early stages but they couldn’t find a way through as both sides were guilty of giving away possession cheaply.
With fourteen minutes gone Pembroke were guilty of an offside and the Quins took the ball. Jake Griffiths then stepped inside a tackler before going on to score against the run of play. Griffiths then added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Ten minutes later Pembroke responded when Sam Smith bundled his way over but Luke Hartland’s conversion attempt went wide in the wind.
Moments later they had their second try as Dom Coleman went over but again Hartland’s conversion attempt went wide.
Smith was having a good game as he showed his strength, pushing away a challenger and making some excellent runs.
Scott Powell was next to go over for a try and this time Hartland was able to add the conversion for a 17-7 lead.
Pembroke were turning on the style and an excellent pass out to the right found Barry John who ran over to earn his side a bonus point but Hartland could not add the conversion.
On the stroke of half time Smith went over under the posts for his second try and Hartland added the extra two points to give the visitors a 29-7 half time lead.
The Quins looked to respond early in the second half and they were rewarded when the referee awarded them a penalty try.
There were some big hits going in as both teams battled well to put on a good show in front of a good crowd.
Smith grabbed his hat trick ten minutes into the second half as he emerged from a scrum to touch the ball down but Hartland could not add the extras.
Pembroke continued to play well and came close after a good kick saw the ball go out in the corner but they were unable to take advantage.
With four minutes to go Pembroke scored their seventh try as Billy Wood touched down just outside of the post giving Hartland an easy conversion.
That gave Pembroke a deserved 41-14 win and will give them confidence going into their next game away to Milford next week (Sept 16).
The Quins will be looking to bounce back when they take on Tregaron.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
