Pembrokeshire jockey named Ffos Las ambassador

PEMBROKESHIRE jockey Sean Bowen is to become an official ambassador for Ffos Las Racecourse.

Sean, 21, is from Little Newcastle, and has risen up the riding ranks in the last five years and is now one of the top 10 jump jockeys in the country. He comes from a family who have made a big impression on jump racing for many years. His father, Peter, is a leading racehorse trainer, and his younger brother James was last season’s champion conditional jockey and also won the 2017 Coral Welsh Grand National on Raz De Maree. All three were honoured at last year’s Welsh Horse Racing Awards. Sean’s mother, Karen, was a very accomplished point to point rider and his eldest brother Micky successfully trains point to point horses.

Sean started his race riding career in pony racing and at the age of 16 progressed through the point to point circuit before turning conditional for ten times champion trainer Paul Nicholls in the summer of 2014. He went onto be the youngest ever champion conditional jockey when he won the title on the final day of his first season as a professional in 2015. He is currently in seventh place in the Stobart Jump Jockeys Championship for the 2018/19 season and has ridden over 350 winners since taking out his professional licence. Two of Sean’s biggest wins have come in the Bet 365 Gold Cup at Sandown Park, on Just A Par in 2015 trained by Paul Nicholls (on the day he was crowned champion conditional) and then winning it again in 2017 on Henllan Harri, trained by his father. Success also came last year when winning the Summer Plate at Market Rasen in July aboard More Bucks, again trained by his father and part-owned by brother Micky. Most recently, Sean won the Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) at Haydock on Lisnagar Oscar for Rebecca Curtis, on the same day he won the William Hill Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade 3) on Robinsfirth for trainer Colin Tizzard.

As part of his new role, Sean will be writing a weekly blog for the racecourse website and on Ffos Las race days, he will be talking through his rides in the restaurant and hospitality boxes.

There will also be an opportunity for customers to walk the course with him to find out what goes through a jockey’s mind during a race.

Phil Bell, Executive Director of Ffos Las Racecourse, said: “Sean is very much a local boy made good and we are delighted he’s agreed to be our ambassador. He’s already a very successful jockey and has a huge future ahead of him.
“I’m sure our customers will enjoy being able to follow his career more closely and hear from him regularly whether in person or via his weekly blog.”

Sean said: “Ffos Las is a great racecourse and I really enjoy riding there. I am delighted to be part of the team in 2019.
“I hope that my involvement with the racecourse will encourage more people to come and experience what an enjoyable day’s racing can be experienced at Ffos Las.”

Five youth team players earn praise after impressing at championship level

CRYMYCH RUGBY CLUB has hailed the contribution of five of its youth players after they stepped up to feature in a senior side at championship level.

The young players, who remain part of the club’s youth setup, were given the opportunity to test themselves in a higher-level fixture, and impressed coaches and supporters alike with their attitude and commitment on the field.

Club representatives said it was “fantastic to see” the dedication shown by the youngsters, who rose to the occasion in what was described as a special experience for both the players and the club.

The match provided a valuable opportunity for development, allowing the next generation of Crymych players to gain experience in a more competitive environment while contributing to the senior squad.

The rugby club said the move reflects its long-term focus on nurturing homegrown talent and creating a clear pathway from youth rugby into the senior game.

Officials added that the future of the club looks bright, with the performance of the young “Teirw” – or Bulls – offering reassurance that the next generation is ready to carry the club forward.

The club congratulated the players on their achievement and said it hopes to see more youth players progressing through the ranks in the coming seasons.

Under 13s and under 14s progress after District H finals day success

TENBY UNITED RFC’s junior sides enjoyed a memorable District H finals day, with two age groups securing victories and places in the West Wales cup finals.

The club’s under 13s lifted silverware after beating Crymych 32-17, while the under 14s edged a thrilling contest against Neyland, winning 18-17.

Tenby’s under 12s were also involved in a close match, narrowly losing 31-28 to Haverfordwest.

The under 13s and under 14s will now go on to represent the club at the West Wales cup finals at Parc y Scarlets on May 24.

Tenby United RFC congratulated the young Swifts on their achievements, saying: “Well done Swifts.”

Carew set early pace as rain disrupts Pembrokeshire cricket programme

RAIN played a major part in Week 2 of the Nicholas Insurance Thomas Carroll Pembroke County Cricket League, with several Division 1 fixtures abandoned after strong first-innings performances.

Carew made the biggest statement in the top flight, cruising to a ten-wicket win over St Ishmaels to move clear at the top of the table.

St Ishmaels were bowled out for 110, with Tim Hicks (3-18), Shaun Whitfield (3-14) and Logan Hall (2-27) doing the damage. Carew then eased to 111-0, Hicks completing an outstanding all-round display with 55 not out, alongside Morgan Grieve’s unbeaten 54.

Elsewhere, Narberth piled up 301-7 before rain intervened against Herbrandston, Jamie McCormack hitting a superb 104. Lawrenny (297-7) and Burton (203-7) also posted big totals before the weather had the final say.
