Rooks stun the leaders
CAREW upset league leaders Monkton Swifts on Saturday (Mar 30), as they earned a 3-2 win.
Monkton’s lead at the top has now been cut to four points while Carew have moved to within sixteen points of the Swifts with four games in hand.
After an even start to the game it was the Swifts who took the lead when Ben Steele fired in to the bottom corner.
Five minutes before half time the Rooks were level as Alex Bayley smashed the ball into the net.
In the second half it was Carew who took the lead as Sam Christopher scored from close range.
In the aftermath of the goal Steele was booked for his protests but he then very nearly equalised for the visitors.
His cross-come-shot rebounded back off the post into the path of Ryan Griffiths but Tom Davies made an excellent save to keep the Rooks ahead.
Jack Christopher then played a cross into the box but no one could get on the end of it.
Steele then shot wide for the visitors as action switched from end to end.
Sam Christopher was then played in but as he shot Steele got back to make an excellent block to keep his side in the game.
That looked like it would prove a crucial intervention as the Swifts then won a penalty when James Russell was fouled. He then took the spot kick and scored to level the game at 2-2.
Just as it looked as if the Swifts would escape with a point Jack Christopher poked the ball in to give Carew victory.
It was the Rook’s second victory over the Swifts having already beaten them 4-0 in the first game of the season.
Tonight, Carew travel to Clarbeston Road, while Monkton are next in action on Saturday (Apr 6) as they travel to Hakin.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
