Tish fall short against Carew

Published

on

ST ISHMAELS fell just short in their run chase on Saturday (July 3) as Carew secured victory by 15 runs.

Tish won the toss and chose to bowl first and they were able to bowl Carew out for 178.

Carew lost Tim Hicks and Nick Davies early on, both to the bowling of Brennan Devonald, as they slipped to 31-2.

Lewis Hicks and Nick Scourfield shared 41 runs before the third wicket fell. Devonald was involved again, this time taking the catch to dismiss Hicks on a score of 25 and give Andrew Pawlett his first wicket.

Scourfield and Ian Sefton shared another 30 runs for the fourth wicket but when Sefton was caught by Peter Bradshaw off the bowling of Lewis Rhead it sparked a mini-collapse.

That left the home side on 102-4 but they soon found themselves on 122-8.

Luke Hicks fell in similar fashion to Sefton for a third-ball duck and Jonathan Pawlett then bowled Scourfield.

Scourfield had hit seven fours in a score of 49 before he was dismissed.

Ceri Brace was then trapped leg before by Jonathan Pawlett and soon after James Hinchcliffe fell the same way to the bowling of Rhead.

Iori Hicks and Sam Harts steadied the ship and they were able to share 45 runs for the ninth wicket.

Hicks hit three fours and a six in his score of 32 from 21 balls before he was caught by Jonathan Pawlett off the bowling of Devonald.

Harts hit a four and a six in his score of 22 but he was caught and bowled by Rhead to bring the innings to a close in the 41st over.

It meant that Tish would need 179 to win but they lost wickets at regular intervals early on in their reply and they soon found themselves on 66-5.

Lewis Rhead was the first to go as he was caught by James Hinchcliffe off the bowling of Sam Harts.

Jonathan Pawlett was next to go as he was also caught by Hinchcliffe off the bowling of Sion Jenkins.

Phil Cockburn was then trapped leg before by Iori Hicks who then also had Brennan Devonald caught by Lewis Hicks.

Andrew Pawlett was then caught and bowled Ceri Brace on a score of 14.

With five wickets down Tish were staring at defeat but opener Peter Bradshaw and Ieuan Hawkins shared 54 runs for the sixth wicket as they looked to get their side back in the game.

Bradshaw had reached his half century but Hawkins, who had made a score of 22, was then bowled by Brace.

Bradshaw shared another 30 runs with James Hall but Hall was sent back to the pavilion after being caught by Nick Davies off the bowling of Brace.

Brace then caught and bowled Peter Thomas to reduce Tish to 151-8.

Bradshaw had hit five fours and four sixes in his knock of 91 and he looked well set to reach his century.

It wasn’t to be though as he was bowled by James Hinchcliffe to all but end Tish’s hopes of victory.

Robbie Thomas and Graham Ninnis took over but they were unable to help Tish to their target as Carew held on to secure victory.

As the game progressed, Monkton Swifts brought in reinforcements, including Ben Steele, to regain control. Their efforts paid off when Jordan Kilby leveled the score at 2-2 with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.

As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.

We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.

Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.

At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
