Cresselly hold off Town to seal win
CRESSELLY picked up their seventh win of the season on Saturday (Jul 31), as they beat Haverfordwest by just seven runs.
Having lost the toss, Cresselly were asked to bat first and they made 199-7 from their 45 overs.
They lost opener Matthew Morgan early on as he was bowled by Ashley James but Dan Sutton, fresh from his double century the previous week, and Simon Cole added 42 runs for the second wicket.
Cole made a score of 16 but he suffered the same fate as Morgan as Cresselly were reduced to 54-2.
Sutton hit seven fours and a six as he reached a score of 55 but he was then caught by Dai Davies off the bowling of Jake Merry.
Ollie Berry made a score of 29 with three fours but he was run out by Johnny White.
Chris Phillips and Charlie Arthur added another 39 runs for the fifth wicket as they looked to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Phillips only hit two fours in his knock of 32 but he was then bowled by Archie Thomas.
Arthur fell soon after when he was caught and bowled by Clive Tucker on a score of 17 and that left Cresselly on 165-6.
Tucker also trapped Ryan Lewis leg before but Mike Venables and Tom Murphy were able to stay at the crease until the end.
Murphy was not out on 12 while Venables finished not out on a score of 21 from 16 balls.
Needing 200 to win, Town made a good start to their reply as Mikey Jones and Jake Merry shared 80 runs for the first wicket.
Chris Phillips then made the breakthrough as he had Jones stumped by Neilson Cole on a score of 28.
Merry had hit four fours in his score of 45 but he became Phillips’ second victim as he was caught by Simon Cole.
Dan Field could only add 12 before he was caught by Tom Arthur off the bowling of Phillips.
Phillips wasn’t finished there either as he had Danny Potter stumped by Cole as Town slipped from 80-1 to 104-4.
It was soon 111-5 as James Marchant was caught by Tom Arthur off the bowling of Cole.
Archie Thomas added 14 runs before suffering the same fate as Marchant as Town slipped into further trouble on 135-6.
However, Dai Davies and Jack Scriven added 42 runs for the seventh wicket to swing the game back in Town’s favour.
Scriven departed after being run out by Neilson Cole but with Davies nearing his half century, Town were still in with a chance.
Tom Murphy then had Ashley James caught by Matthew Morgan to reduce Town to 184-8.
Davies and Johnny White took the score into the 190s but Charlie Arthur bowled Davies on a score of 53 to all but end Town’s hopes of victory.
White and Clive Tucker were unable to find the runs needed as Cresselly held on for the win.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
