Former Pembroke Dock councillor censured over racist image

FORMER Pembroke Dock Town Councillor Peter Kraus has received a formal censure from the Local Authority’s Standards Committee.

A preliminary meeting on June 23 found a case to answer and a hearing to reach a decision on the case took place in County Hall on Wednesday, September 8.

The proceedings arose after a complaint to the Ombudsman about an image former Cllr Kraus shared on Facebook.

The Public Services Ombudsman for Wales found a case to answer and sent his report back to Pembrokeshire County Council for action by the Standards Committee.

The discussions about the case took place behind locked doors.

The public and press were excluded from hearing how Committee members reached their decision.

After lengthy discussions, the Committee decided the image shared by Cllr Kraus brought his position as councillor into disrepute.

The Standards Committee found that former Cllr Kraus knew – and any reasonable person would have known – the picture he posted on Facebook was derogatory towards black people and racist.

However, after considering all of the evidence, the Committee cleared Cllr Kraus of breaching the Code of Conduct regarding the duty to treat people equally and uphold the provisions of the Equalities Act regarding discrimination.

Instead, Committee Members found Peter Kraus had breached the Code of Conduct by not showing respect and consideration for others when he posted the fateful image.

They decided that by doing so, he brought his office into disrepute.

The Committee will publish its detailed reasons in due course.

Council warns of icy conditions as temperatures drop

ROAD users in Pembrokeshire are being urged to exercise caution tonight as temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing.

Pembrokeshire County Council has announced that road surface temperatures could reach as low as -2°C, with the possibility of sleet or snow on higher ground. In response, precautionary salting of the county’s primary routes will be carried out this evening and overnight.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Road users are advised to take care if travelling on untreated roads.”

Motorists are reminded to plan ahead and drive carefully, particularly in areas that may not have been treated.

The market will take place at the Lower Charles Street Car Park, promising a vibrant mix of stalls and attractions. Organizers are seeking a variety of vendors, including those offering gifts, children’s toys and games, food, cakes, flowers, and more.

There’s also an open invitation for someone with small children’s rides to add to the festive fun. A highlight of the event will be the Grinch’s Grotto, offering an entertaining twist to this year’s celebrations.
