‘I want hormone therapy’
IT HAS been claimed that National security leaker Chelsea Manning is not receiving medical treatment for her gender identity condition.
David Coombs, Manning’s civilian lawyer, and the American Civil Liberties Union have informed the US Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and officials including Chuck Hagel, the defence secretary, that a lawsuit will be filed if it is not confirmed by September 4 that the army private will be provided with the treatment.
The army private from Haverfordwest, who changed her name from Bradley after her conviction, is serving a 35-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth for supplying the WikiLeaks website with classified documents. She feels like a woman in a man’s body, which is also known as gender dysphoria. She sought treatment and evaluation after being sent to Fort Leavenworth last September. She is asking for hormone therapy, and to be allowed to live as a woman.
The gender dysphoria diagnosis was confirmed by military doctors who recommended a treatment plan, but according to the ACLU, she has yet to receive any. Chase Strangio, the lawyer for the ACLU’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project, said: “The continued failure to provide Ms Manning with this treatment is inconsistent with well-established medical protocols and basic constitutional principles”.
Mr Strangio accused the US Army of withholding treatment for political reasons, calling it a “cruel and unusual punishment”. Manning’s advocates say the lack of treatment puts her at risk for serious long-term psychological and physical harm. Former intelligence analyst Manning was sentenced last year for six Espionage Act violations and 14 other offences for providing WikiLeaks with more than 700,000 secret military and US State Department documents.
Manning’s request for treatment conflicts with a policy that bans transgender people from serving in the US military, and was also the first request made by a transgender military convict, but she cannot be discharged while serving her prison sentence. “Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope you will support me in this transition,” she said a year ago, after revealing her intent to live life as a woman.

Tigers second division Cup Champions
In a thrilling Pembrokeshire Division Two Cup final under the floodlights of Bridge Meadow Stadium, fans witnessed an epic battle between Monkton Swifts reserves and Johnston. Despite Monkton Swifts reserves being touted as favorites, Johnston proved their mettle from the outset.
The game kicked off with a burst of energy as Johnston’s center half, Craig Bendall, seized an early opportunity to put his team ahead just ten minutes into the match.
