Mauve stinger jellyfish spotted ‘in their thousands’ on north facing Pembrokeshire beaches

Beach lovers are being urged caution this week following reports that thousands of mauve stinger jellyfish have been spotted frequenting some of Pembrokeshire’s north-facing beaches.
The stingers, renowned for packing a powerful punch on bathers, have been spotted at Martin’s Haven as well as Musselwick in the Marloes peninsular.
“They’re an amazing site but please take care if you’re in the water,” commented a Pembrokeshire Marine Wildlife spokesperson.
“They can deliver a painful sting, just like a blue jellyfish or a compass jellyfish.”
Dog walkers are also being warned to keep their canines away from any stinger jellyfish which may be found washed up on the beaches.
Although small, the mauve stinger certainly packs a powerful punch, with long tentacles and warty structures on its ‘bell’, which is full of stinging cells. Small crustaceans known as amphipods hang out inside the ring of tentacles and are able to survive unharmed. The mauve stinger likes to feed on other small jellyfish and oceanic sea squirts, also known as ascidians.
This jellyfish usually appears a bluey purple (mauve) colour with a globe shaped umbrella covered in orangey brown warts. Long, thin tentacles hang down from around the bell, reaching a maximum of 3 metres.
As its scientific name suggests – Pelagia Noctiluca – this jellyfish can glow brightly at night if disturbed.

Electrical supplies to all neighbouring properties, both domestic and commercial, remain unaffected.
Meanwhile Tesco has updated its google listing to say that the store will open at 6am tomorrow (February 25), however this may be subject to change.
