Valero supports Torch Theatre’s boldest pantomime yet

Published

on

WITH just a week to go before the festive pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk opens its curtains, the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven is proud to announce Valero Energy Corporation as its pantomime sponsor for 2024.

Attracting around 10,000 attendees annually, the Torch’s pantomime has become a cornerstone of Pembrokeshire’s festive season. Last year’s production of Sleeping Beauty set new audience records, and this year’s show promises even greater excitement.

Community engagement through theatre
The pantomime is not only a spectacle but also a significant educational opportunity. Approximately 4,000 schoolchildren and teachers are expected to attend, with tailored educational packs distributed to schools to enhance the experience. Public performances draw over 6,000 enthusiastic audience members, creating a lively atmosphere filled with singing, clapping, and cheering.

Chelsey Gillard, Artistic Director of the Torch Theatre, expressed her gratitude for Valero’s support:
“We are thrilled to be working with Valero to bring the magic of pantomime to the Torch once again. This support allows us to keep ticket prices affordable, ensuring the festive spirit reaches communities across Pembrokeshire and beyond. Tickets are selling fast, especially during Christmas week, and we look forward to welcoming everyone.”

Valero’s commitment to the arts
Founded in 1980, Valero Energy Corporation is the world’s largest independent petroleum refiner and a global leader in renewable energy. Since acquiring Pembroke Refinery in 2011, the company has fostered strong ties with the local community.

“This year marks the 60th anniversary of Pembroke Refinery, which has a long tradition of supporting the arts in Pembrokeshire,” said Stephen Thornton, Valero Pembroke Refinery’s Public Affairs Manager.
“There’s no finer tradition at Christmas than pantomime. Jack and the Beanstalk is a firm family favourite, and we’re thrilled to support this season’s production at the Torch. Excellence and inclusivity are at the heart of Valero’s ethos, aligning perfectly with the Torch Theatre’s family-friendly productions.”

A festive tradition for all
Chelsey added: “Panto is the most vibrant part of our year at the Torch, and we are so excited to be working with Valero on Jack and the Beanstalk. A huge thank you to everyone at Valero for their generous support.”

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at the Torch Theatre from Friday, December 13, to Sunday, December 29, with matinee and evening performances. Tickets are priced at £23.50, £19.50 for concessions, or £75 for a family ticket. Special performances include a Relaxed Environment show on Saturday, December 14, at 2:00pm, and a BSL-supported show on Tuesday, December 17, at 6:00pm.

Unforgettable Pembrokeshire hotspots to explore this Christmas

Pembrokeshire has a huge range of events that you can attend over the Christmas period. With scenic views and plenty of cosy experiences, it’s important to know what events are being held so you can make the most out of your trip.

Nightlife during the festive period

Traditional establishments in towns like Pembroke Dock and Fishguard often host live bands, quiz nights and holiday menus. Some venues even offer gaming machines for those who like to try their luck. The Lobster Pot Inn is an ideal spot with multiple games machines, including a claw machine, that you can try your hand at. Since Pembrokeshire doesn’t have a large-scale casino like you’d find in other major cities, if you’d prefer something less physically hands on, you have the option of signing up with an online bet casino that includes games such as 20p Roulette, Blackjack Classic, and an array of online slots. Whether you prefer the physical thrill of the catch with a claw machine or the apprehension from watching your virtual card being drawn, there is something for everyone in Pembrokeshire.

Christmas markets and celebrations in Pembrokeshire

Tenby’s Tudor Merchant House hosts an annual celebration to commemorate the Christmas period. The seaside town looks fantastic at this time of year, with plenty of local craft stalls, entertainment, and food vendors. You can also visit Pembroke Castle, for more Christmas-themed activities. Narberth is also known for boutique shopping, with plenty of festive charm. There you can expect to find handmade crafts, seasonal goodies and a full Christmas market.

If you want a more scenic experience, you may enjoy a festive walk in Newport. People often go stargazing there, and it’s not surprising to see fireworks displays held as the nights grow darker. Just make sure you wrap up warm because Pembrokeshire is on the coast, you can expect strong gusts of wind, which can make the chill feel worse than it is. With that being said, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the stars, which is a great way for you to finish off a night of fun.

Events and ticketed experiences

If you’d rather attend an event, there are many to choose from. Llys y Fran is held between the 7th and 8th of December, with a charming market full of decorations. The St Brides Spa Hotel also gives people the chance to enjoy afternoon tea and a Christmas feast. This is being held on various dates, with the final bookings taking place on Christmas Eve. You’ll need to pay in advance if you want to be able to take part in this, as it’s very popular and places are booking up fast.

The Torch Theatre, which you’ll find in Milford Haven, is also known for hosting a range of festive performances. This includes live shows and concerts. As November comes to an end, you can expect to see even more announced for the festive period, so keep an eye out. Theatre Gwaun in Fishguard also hosts a range of festive film screenings, suited to those who want to do something relaxed and enjoyable.

Other options include the Picton Castle Christmas Lights. This event is held throughout December and if you book a ticket, you will be able to go and see the various light displays that are held there. In winter, the whole place becomes a wonderland, with enchanted experiences suitable for everyone. Sometimes there are additional seasonal activities that you can take part in. This includes themed tours and seasonal crafts, however, more will be announced as time goes on. You can usually book tickets online, which makes it easier to plan your experience.

Choir brings Christmas cheer to Pembroke Castle

Published

COLOURFUL choristers filled Pembroke Castle with festive spirit during its Christmas Fayre on Saturday, November 30.

Dressed in an array of Christmas jumpers, ties, and Santa hats, the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir delighted visitors with a programme of 12 songs, complemented by leading several beloved carols.

Musical Director Juliet Rossiter conducted the choir, ensuring their performance ran smoothly. Accompanying them for the second time was the Rev William Lambert, the choir’s new accompanist who has quickly become a valued addition.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, two members of Cor Meibion De Cymru joined the choir on stage for a rousing rendition of American Trilogy, marking a memorable conclusion to their set.

As 2024 draws to a close, the choir plans to bring joy to three local residential homes before taking a well-earned break. Practices will resume in January, and new members are warmly encouraged to join.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at 7:00pm at St Teilo’s Church Hall, Pembroke Dock. Interested singers can contact Choir Secretary Dave Powell on 07572 080401.
