VE Day remembered at Tenby Golf Club with charity ‘Allied Fours’ tournament
Members raise £290 for veterans as club honours its wartime history
TENBY GOLF CLUB marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a special “Allied Fours” competition, raising £290 for Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion.
The event, held under clear blue skies, saw 42 members take to the course in period dress—complete with flat caps, plus fours, and 1940s-style ‘Land Girl’ outfits—in a spirited day of remembrance and fundraising.
The competition, which paired members in mixed teams, ended with victory for Veronica Davies, Alan Sayers, and Chris Topliss, who finished with 86 points. Close behind were Ann Topliss, Andrew Bray and birthday golfer Will Jordan, who scored 82.
Vice Captain Brian Jones said: “There was a real sense of reflection and remembrance throughout the day. We thought of those former members who served in Flanders and at sea.”
Tenby Golf Club’s links with the military stretch back to 1888, when it first sought War Department permission to use the land. During the First World War, parts of the course were commandeered as firing ranges. In the Second World War, nearby South Beach was transformed into a minefield. One club legend recalls a fox terrier belonging to a member retrieving golf balls from beyond the barbed wire, small enough not to trigger the explosives.
The day ended with a group photo on the clubhouse steps, echoing the camaraderie of generations past. Special thanks were paid to the greenkeeping team—on the course from 4:30am—as well as to Theresa and Mick Seal and Gilly Jones for running the field kitchen, and to organiser Simon Sweet.
Mick Seal, Chair of the Competitions and Handicaps Committee, said: “Today was about honouring our club’s history and supporting those who serve. The money raised will help provide vital support for veterans and their families.”

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
