Hockey boys win tournament

hockey boys winNINE year eight boys from Sir Thomas Picton School won the 5×60 Under 13 boys hockey tournament held on the Astro Turf at Fishguard Leisure Centre on last week.

This was the second year in a row that the STP had tasted success in this tournament. The boys topped a group containing Milford School, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol y Preseli and Ysgol Bro Gwaun with three wins and a draw, before beating Ysgol Dewi Sant 3-1 in the final, thanks to a hat trick from Jack Evans.

5×60 is a Sport Wales initiative to encourage more young people to participate in Sport and Physical Activity and is managed by Sport Pembrokeshire, the Sport Development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council.

Division 2: Whitland keep promotion hopes alive

WHITLAND kept their promotion hopes alive on Saturday (Aug 13) as they beat Pembroke by five wickets.

Going into the final day of the season, Whitland sit eight points behind the top two and a win coupled with low-scoring defeats for the others could see them earn promotion back to Division 1.

On Saturday, Pembroke won the toss and chose to bat and they made a good score of 219-8 in their innings.

Luke Butler made a score of 50 and Will Davies was the top scorer with a knock of 63. Andrew Price then finished unbeaten on 27 to set Whitland 220 to win the game.

Luc Owen took two wickets for the visitors while Cian Rees (2-22) and Charlie Bujega (2-21) also claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Kevin Pearce batted well for his score of 52 and Jack Bowen was the top scorer with a knock of 60.

Connor Bowen added 18 and Gethin Scourfield finished on 47 not out as Whitland secured victory with two overs to spare.

Jonathan Rogers claimed 2-24 for the home side and Steve Durston had 2-23 for Pembroke but they could not stop Whitland getting over the line.

Whitland’s final game of the season sees them host Llechryd, themselves also in with a chance of promotion, looking for a win that could see them go up.

Division 2: Burton stay top after beating Llanrhian

BURTON remain top of Division 2 after they beat Llanrhian by six wickets on Saturday (Aug 13).

Promotion is not yet guarnteed for Burton as third and fourth placed Whitland and Llechryd could still catch should the leaders slip up on the final day.

On Saturday, Llanrhian won the toss and chose to bat and they scored 174-6 in their innings.

Adam Phillips top scored with 34 for the visitors while Jack Jones added a score of 33. Iwan James scored 30 before Geraint Morris finished unbeaten on 24.

Morgan Scale took two wickets for Burton to finish with 2-37 while Jon Scale (1-21) and Dan Ridge (1-22) also claimed wickets.

In reply, Toby Hayman made an early score of 21 and Martin Jones reached a half century before falling on 54.

Morgan Scae then finished unbeatn on 15 but Jon Venables was the star of the innings as he finished unbeaten on 66.

Jack Jones took two wickets for Llanrhian but it wasn’t enough.

On the final day of the season (Saturday, August 20), Burton travel to Johnston while Llanrhian play Carew seconds.

Carew ease to win over Tish

CAREW earned their eighth win of the season on Saturday (Aug 13) as they beat St Ishmaels by nine wickets.

Tish won the toss and chose to bat but they were bowled out for 117.

They lost Phil Llewellyn early on when he was bowled by Iori Hicks before Peter Bradshaw and Karl Rhead shared 35 runs for the second wicket.

Bradshaw hit four fours in his score of 21 but he was then caught by Shaun Whitfield off the bowling of James Hinchliffe.

Hinchliffe also had Brennan Devonald caught by Sion Jenkins and Whitfield then trapped Rhead leg before on a score of 19.

Hinchliffe then had the wicket of Richard Brock and Jonathan Pawlett (11) as Tish slipped to 57-6.

Andrew Williams was then trapped leg before by Whitfield who also then bowled Lewis Rhead.

Andrew Pawlett and Lenny Rees then shared 20 runs for the ninth wicket as they looked to give Tish a score they could defend.

Pawlett hit seven fours and a six in his score of 38 from 17 balls but he was then bowled by Hinchliffe.

Lenny Rees then made a score of 14 before being bowled by Whitfield as the innings came to a close.

James Hinchliffe and Rhys Davies got Carew’s reply off to a good start as they put on 61 runs for the first wicket.

Hinchliffe hit seven fours in his score of 37 but he was then trapped leg before by Andrew Pawlett.

Davies and Brian Hall were then untroubled as they guided Carew to their target in the 27th over.

Hall finished unbeaten on 23 while Davies hit seven fours and a six as he finished unbeaten on 51.

The win for Carew keeps them in fourth place and their is still a chance they can achieve a higher position.

On Saturday, August 20, Carew visit Llangwm while St Ishmaels host Saundersfoot.
