Milford Haven Sea Cadets: “A force to be reckoned with”

THIS weekend saw the annual West Wales District Drill and Piping Competition, held in the Army Reserve Centre in Swansea, which saw Milford Haven Sea Cadets take winning titles by storm!

Milford Haven Unit entered the Colour Party Competition, the Piping Team Competition and also the Junior Sea Cadets Piping and Drill Competition.

The Colour Party Competition consists of a uniform inspection, drill display using the correct routine and movements as laid down by the Royal Navy Drill Manual and the smartness of the display.

The Piping Team Competition consists of a uniform inspection and then they are marked on the precision, clarity and timing of five calls commonly used in the Royal Navy. The Junior Sea Cadets is of a similar competition, with different calls and with an unarmed drill display of 5 minutes of their choice.

Milford Haven Sea Cadets after beating off fierce competition, were announced as the Winning Colour Party, Winning Piping Team, Winning and Runner Up Individual Pipers.  Alongside this, the Piping Team were announced as the Best Dressed Piping Team and both our Individual Pipers came Joint Best Dressed Individuals (Cdt 1st Hayley Ffrench and Cdt Rhys Hughes-Phillips).

The Junior Sea Cadets entered the Individual Piping and Leading Junior Cadet Liam Hooper came Runner Up, with the team also coming runner up in the Unarmed Junior Drill.  With an amazing result for the Squad Commander, winning best Junior Squad Commander (also LJC Liam Hooper)! A fantastic result for the Juniors.

Lieutenant (SCC) William Elliott RNR, the Commanding Officer said: “I was over the moon to see that the cadets are keeping the high standards of drill and dress that we have instilled over the years and are also improving year on year.

“They also showed that Milford Haven is on the up and returning to be a force to be reckoned with at competitions; especially as this is the second competition since my return to the command and we walk away with more trophies and medals than we could hope for!  A brilliant team of adults and cadets!”.

Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance

FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.

Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.

Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.

Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
