Full throttle for volunteer bikers
A SERVICE which allows blood and tissue samples to be transferred quickly between hospitals has officially been launched in Pembrokeshire.
Blood Bikes Wales motorcycle riders can be called on by the local health service to help to transport lifesaving supplies such as medicines, blood and plasma across sites during weekends and bank holidays. The volunteers complement Hywel Dda University Health Board’s transport service over weekends.
The charity has already been providing a support service for the University Health Board in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.
Blood Bikes Wales started in February 2011, after a group of bikers heard about similar schemes in England.
The Pembrokeshire Blood Bikes representative and coordinator Phil Harries said: “Blood Bikes Wales was founded five years ago and we have worked hard at building the charity into an organisation that can deliver a highly professional, reliable and sustainable service.
“A big thank you to everyone that has been involved during 2015, for all the generous donations and support to get Blood Bikes Wales up and running in Pembrokeshire.”
Peter Llewellyn, Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships for Hywel Dda University Health Board added: “We are delighted that this valuable service will now be available at each of our main hospitals from March 2016, fulfilling a pledge that was made when the service was first successfully introduced in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.
“We are very grateful for the ongoing commitment of Blood Bikes Wales, their volunteer riders and for all the support they receive from local businesses and organisations and in particular our local communities.”
The service currently has 30 riders and 50 members across mid and west Wales with five people initially available to cover the Pembrokeshire area.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
