Organisations get awards nod
FOUR Pembrokeshire-based organisations have been shortlisted for a coveted Arts & Business Cymru Award 2016.
The shortlist which was announced on March 21 saw the Port of Milford Haven, The VC Gallery, the Torch Theatre and Bluestone Resorts recognised in the Arts, Business & Young People category.
This award recognises partnerships that have harnessed the power of the arts to engage young people.
These four organisations join a total of 21 businesses and their arts partners which have been named as finalists for this year’s awards, and are now set to fight it out to win one of the sought-after trophies at the award ceremony in May.
As well as the winners of the eight award categories, recipients of the prestigious A&B Cymru Award for Philanthropy, The Admiral Business of the Year and the Hospital Innovations Arts Award, will also be announced on the night, for which there is no shortlist.
The 23rd Arts & Business (A&B) Cymru Awards 2016 will take place at the Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday May 14 . The ceremony and dinner is sponsored for the sixth year by Global Energy Company Valero, and will be presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas and Arfon Haines Davies.
The awards trophies will be handed over by a range of Welsh celebrities.
The annual event celebrates companies and individuals who work with the arts to achieve core business objectives which, in turn, benefit people and communities across Wales.
The award winners will be chosen by an independent panel of judges who have expertise in practical art forms, sponsorship and business. They will each receive a specially commissioned trophy that was designed and made by Breconbased sculptor weaver, Sue Hiley Harris, in collaboration with her son, artist Owen Harris.
A&B Cymru’s chief executive, Rachel Jones, said: “The partnerships nominated this year show the strength and diversity of the artistic community throughout Wales, and the finalists have all worked hard to develop relationships that extend beyond their sector and enhance the work within private enterprise.
“These awards are a great opportunity to highlight the fantastic work that businesses and the arts do together, and I’d like to thank all of our sponsors for supporting us in hosting these awards yet again. All of the finalists shortlisted should be immensely proud of their achievements, and I hope that this recognition encourages them to continue with their inspiring work.”

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
