Llechryd steal march on rivals
Llechryd 2nd XI (158-5) beat Hundleton (157-6) by five wickets
IF THE FIRST weekend of the Pembrokeshire league season stood out for 21 positive results from 24 matches, week two can best be described as a damp squib, as all but one of the scheduled matches succumbed to the weather.
Unsurprisingly this occurred at Llechryd as their second team stole a march on the others in the league by securing 28 points in their victory over Division 4 rivals Hundleton.
In an entertaining tussle at Castell Malgwyn Field it was youngsters Tomos Davies [50] and Luke Palmer Davies [51] who secured victory as the hosts won by five wickets.
Hundleton’s total of 157-6 was built around the efforts of Jonathan Williams [35] and particularly Paul Fox, with 43, who also took 2-35 in conjunction with the venerable Chris Stapleton 2-33. Neither could curtail the efforts of a very youthful and enthusiastic home XI. Llechryd’s main bowler was Malcolm McHugh [2-10] supported by Martin Jones [2- 27].
Discussions continue within local cricket circles as to the validity of those teams being rained off not getting any points, where as those who do play are able to pick up maximum points on offer. This is illustrated by the Llechryd v Hundleton fixture being the only one played on Saturday and the hosts catapulting to the top of the table, despite picking up just four points on the opening day.
Over the last two decades the County Club AGM has seen adjustments, amendments and new rules adopted in the hope of seeing fair play, yet Saturday’s one result again opens the discussion for cricket enthusiasts. The comparative in Division 5 [win / lose and no draw] will be keenly observed and if the merits of this seem worthwhile it would be worth a trial throughout the leagues for two years. This would at least stop sides who play stealing a march on their opponents who don’t play where the effects may be felt in crucial promotion / relegation issues.
