Haverfordwest man appears in court over attempted rape of two women and a child

THE DEFENDANT in what the police are describing as ‘a serious sexual assault case’ in Pembrokeshire has appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court today (Friday, May 21).

Anthony Williams, aged 42, of Hill Street, Haverfordwest, who was arrested on Monday, 17 May, appeared to confirm his name and address. He is charged with two counts of attempted rape of a woman 16 or over, and one of attempted rape of a girl under 13.

DCI Cameron Ritchie, a senior investigating officer on this case, said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, which happened on a cycle path between Haverfordwest and Tiers Cross.

He added: “We would like to thank the public for their support and understanding. The response to our media appeal provided vital intelligence to support our investigation, which we are extremely grateful for.”

Superintendent Anthony Evans said: “Incidents of this nature are extremely rare in the Dyfed-Powys area. The community may have seen an increased presence of police officers within the local area as part of the investigation and also to offer reassurance to residents.

“I would like to echo the comments of DCI Ritchie by thanking our community in helping us with this investigation.”

A 35-year-old man, who was initially arrested in connection with this matter, has been released and will face no further action.

Some members of the public have questioned the practice of naming a suspect after they are charged with an offence.

Replying to such a question on their Facebook news feed, Dyfed-Powys Polcie said “We follow the College of Policing guidance which tells us that a person should be named once they’re charged in all cases, unless there are exceptional reasons not to.

“We completely agree that everyone has a right to a fair trial, that’s why we monitor comments made on our posts, and will remove any which may undermine this important principle.

“This goes for all of our social media posts, not just those that name someone – wherever there may be a risk to an ongoing case, we will act.

“That said, we’d much rather that people commenting do so responsibly so that there’s no need for us to intervene, which is why we’ve included this appeal in our post.”

Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance

FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.

Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.

Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.

Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
